When I first started working with crystals, my set contained only seven different colors, one for each chakra, and I gradually built up me collection by one or two stones at a time. I found that collecting crystals this way, I remebered the names more easily and didnt need to cope with a variety of different energies all at once.
Deciding Which Crystals Are Right For You
If you are buying crystals, I suggest you consider which stones you are drawn to, at they will generally be the crystals you need to work with at that point in time. You may use a pendulum to select exactly which crystal is best for you(see chapter sevem on dowsing), or you may just know intuitively, as soon as you look at the crystal, which one is right for you.
Pay no attention to anyone who tells you that if your hands arent tingling, then it isnt the crystal for you(as someone once told me!). You msy feel an instant connection with a crystal when you it, and you may experience tingling hands, a rush of energy, or just a feeling of belonging or you may feel nothing. These responses are perfectly normal. I have purchased a crystal and felt nothing at the time, only for the stone to become the one I work with and carry around with me most often.
If you have a specific ailment or issue that you would like to work with, you might like to make a list of things that are bothering you and then use your intuition or a pendulum to select the right crystal. Everyone is different, so while the store online shop may label a certain crystal as helping with a particular condition, that may not be the one you need.
If there is a crystal you really do not like the look of or if you feel uncomfortable with its energy, this could indicate that it will bring up issues that you are not ready to deal with at the time.
Crystal Shapes
Crystals come in different forms and shapes, and it is a good idea to think about the purpose of your crystal before purchasing it. For example, if you are intending to carry the crystal in a pocket or bra, you may want to choose the tumbled version so that there are no sharp bits to poke into you. A raw crystal could be used for nets or placed on the body in a chakra layout. I have found that the enrgy from raw crystals is more "earthy" than of tumblestones, which have a smoother, more uniform energy. One is not better than the other; they are just different.
Tumblestones, or Tumblies
These are raw crystals that have been placed in a large drum with some grit and lubricant and rotated so that the crystals are gradually eroded, which makes them smooth. Tumblestones, or " tumblies" as they are sometimes called, are good for carrying around in a pocket or bra, or they can be put in a spiral cage and hung from a necklace. Spiral cages can be purchased from most metaphysical stores in a variety of sizes to suit most tumblestones. Tumblestones are also useful when placing on or around the body, although if they are too spherical they will roll off, so these crystals may need taping in place with microporous tape.
Wands and Points
These can be cut to shape, but some minerals naturally form in a wand shape, like quartz. Wands and points are good for directional energy, so they can be used to bring energy into a specific point on the body, or to draw energy away from an area. Some wands habe rounded bases, so by gently rubbing an area of pain, these can helo bring relief by drawing the unwanted energy away from the body. This activity also has a slight massage effect, which can be benefical.
