I rolled onto my side, feeling tears build up in my eyes as I tried to drown out my parents' yelling downstairs.

"You've never gone this long without messaging me."

"I've done a lot of things wrong, haven't I?"

"Please respond. I miss you, L."

I laid there for what felt like an eternity, and my phone didn't ping.

When I got a message, my heart leaped into my throat in excitement. But it wasn't L.

One new message from Cynthia:

"Hey little sis. I don't know if they told you, but mom and dad are going to be leaving for about a week and I'm coming home to take care of you."

"We both know I'm broke though. I found a way to make money, but we need to bring this kid from the hospital home."

"I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight, Amira."
