I follow the staff member into the elevator to take me up to the meeting rooms upstairs. Excitement and nervousness filled inside me as we went past each floor in the elevator. I'm excited to be starting this job and being able to help out someone in any way I can. But, I'm also nervous to be tutoring an idol or a trainee. Especially if this person is an idol, that means they're practically a celebrity. Am I even that worthy?
We reached the 7th floor and the staff member gestures for us to step out. I continue to follow them down the hallway and into a room with the words, "Meeting Room 3" on the grainy glass door. As soon as I enter, the staff member leaves me and I'm greeted by a tall, heavyset looking man. He shakes my hand and gives me a friendly smile and offers a seat for me at the table. As I sit down he sits in his seat across the table from me. I quickly take notice of the different papers and folders on the table between us.
"Did you get here alright?" He first asks me and I give him a polite nod.
"Good! Do you want coffee? or tea or water before we begin?"
"Hm, some water would be fine."
"Okay! You got it!" He says and gets up from his chair to go over to the water cooler in the corner of the room.
While waiting I look around the small meeting room and how nice it is. The walls were a cool gray and the JYP Entertainment logo seemed to be the only thing to bring it to life. There was a fern plant in the corner of the room which I felt was pretty typical for meeting rooms. Our meeting table wasn't too big but it was long enough as it had about 8 chairs on each side, including the one I'm sitting in. The floor was hardwood which made it quite easy to slide the wheels of the swivel chairs around.
The man places the cup down in front of me and I thank him as he goes back around the table to go and sit back down in his chair. I took a sip from the plastic cup and my eyes widened at it's rather refreshing and cool taste.
He clears his throat, "So, let's get to business, shall we? I'm Song Hyunwoo and I know you must've been expecting Mrs. Yumin as she was the one that conducted your interview but she's out sick today, so it's just me. I am one of the managers of the idol you'll be tutoring."
Ah...so it's an idol.
"I just need you to sign a few things to ensure that the lessons will remain confidential. Meaning, you cannot post on any social media that you are working with the idol or tell anyone who it is you're working with. This is just to protect his privacy and yours as well, Miss Johnson. You understand that right?"
"Yes, I completely understand," I tell him and he slides the papers over to me, along with a pen.
After I sign what's needed, he explains to me more business things and gives me more papers to sign for those. For all of the tutoring jobs I've ever gotten, this is probably the most secure and longest process I've ever had to do. Mr. Song double checks all the papers before setting them aside.
"Good, that part is done. So, my idol will be going on tour to the USA soon so you will tutor him until then. You have 2 months. Is that alright with you?"
"Yes, that's fine. I can do a good job in 2 months!"
2 months isn't a very long time. Especially to learn a language. I wonder just how this idol can do since 2 months to learn and practice is kinda tight. But, of course, I'll do what I can within this small timespan.
"Good! Just the attitude we at JYPE like! Now give me a minute, I'm going to call the idol now to meet you. Your first official tutor session starts tomorrow. After that, it's between you both to come up with a workable tutor schedule."
"Got it! Oh, but just one question."
"Of course! What is it?"
"Who is this idol of yours exactly?"
"Ah, right, I forgot to mention! Are you familiar with our group, GOT7?"
The name rings a bell in my ears as I remember them when I was doing research on everything JYP and all the artists back when I wasn't sure who I was going to tutor. I prepared for a question like this. GOT7 is a very good group though, I really enjoyed their music when I listened to it for the first time. Probably my favorite group out of all the JYP artists.
"A little, yes! What was their recent song? Oh swear not by the moon, oh woah!~"
He chuckles, "Yes! Exactly! Your tutee is the maknae of the group. His name is Kim Yugyeom."
"Ah, gotcha. Cool!"
He dials up the number on his phone and begins talking to Yugyeom on the other line. The conversation is short as he hanged up right away.
"While waiting for him, I'll go make some copies of your contract with us so you can keep a copy." Mr. Song says standing up from his chair and neatly putting the small stack of papers into the folder he brought.
I thank him and he leaves me alone in the meeting room. The business part is pretty much over but why do I still feel nervous? I've tutored many people before, people of more importance than me, what difference could an idol be? Or, am I nervous about being able to teach this person well under 2 months? Will 2 months be enough for them? Maybe I'm a little worried about that.
The door opens and I immediately get up from my chair as the GOT7 member humbly walks in.
"Hi! You must be Yugyeom!" I greet cheerfully as he comes around the table to me to shake my hand.
"That's me! You're my tutor?"
"Yup! It's nice to meet you! My name is Alesha Johnson but you can just call me Miss Alesha."
He smiles wide, "Ah okay!~ Nice to meet you too, Miss Alesha. I think working with you will really be fun!"
I take notice of how handsome he really is in real life. I've only looked at a few pictures of him and his group when I looked them up and I knew they were handsome. But, in person seems to be a totally different thing. He looked like he just came out of practice or something as his hair was covered under a black baseball cap. His all-black attire of a shirt tucked into black jeans and doc martens made him appear even taller than he already is. The fact website wasn't joking when they said this man was 6 feet tall. Sheesh, what do they feed this guy here? Tall, handsome, down to earth, okay, I can work with this for 2 months, I like this.
"We must choose schedule, right?" He asks me.
"Ah yes! We do."
We pull out our phones and check our individual schedules to see if there's a timeslot or two in our weeks. Since I teach, weekdays aren't the easiest for me, however, weekends are better for me for tutoring. Yugyeom told me the same thing as weekdays he has a lot of practice and preparation to do for his tour with the other members, but his weekends are a bit spacier. After agreed on a schedule, we exchanged numbers. Yugyeom had me double-check on my name spelling since there's many other ways to spell my name.
As we finished exchanging numbers, Mr. Song comes back in the room and comes over to me handing me my copies.
"Ayeee Hyunwoo Hyung!~," Yugyeom says and greets him with a quick hug.
Mr. Song gives us a pleased smile, "I see you two finished meeting already!"
"Yup! I look forward to working with you, Yugyeom."
"Yes, you too, Miss Alesha!"
The meeting then ended. Yugyeom had to return back to practice downstairs and Mr. Song kindly walked with me out of the big building. Welp, here's to a new beginning!
