-LIA-
The enticing scent of maple syrup reached my nostrils as my eyes slowly opened and I realized that I was alone in bed.
The curtains on the back window were drawn and the house was eerily quiet. For a moment, I assumed it was just another day in my empty nest, but after my eyes landed on the bright red 2:00 glaring at me from my alarm clock, I bolted upright only to be greeted by a sore head.
Slowly, memories from the day before filled my mind and I remembered that Trey had been born last night.
I reached over to my nightstand to grab my phone, but paused when my fingertips landed on a sticky note with Jordan's handwriting.
Lia,
Don't get out of bed.
I've gone to get fruit trays and bacon for everybody. The twins are making waffles and Logan headed to the city to get his puppy from his apartment and check on his office. Danny called and said Natalie and Trey had a great night. They'll probably get released this evening. Nate & Maria will be by in time for our late breakfast and we'll figure out exactly who's handling what, but we've got everything under control...so you can rest. I put a message into the headache doctor and his receptionist suggests that you take it easy until you can get in for an appointment.
DON'T GET OUT OF BED.
Love you,
J
I rolled my eyes and pushed myself out of bed anyway.
I didn't need to rest and I didn't need a doctor's appointment.
I rifled through my drawers and closet for something to wear until I settled on a BU hoodie and a pair of yoga pants. I laid it all out on my dresser before hurrying into the bathroom to brush my teeth and take a shower in record time.
I ran a comb through my hair to detangle my curls as best as I could and then pulled it back into a bun. Whilst slipping a bobby pin into the last strand of hair to hold it all in place, I caught a glimpse of my mother staring back at me in the mirror and I realized that in all the commotion of the day before, I'd forgotten to call her and let her know Logan's party had been canceled.
Crap.
A sigh escaped my lips and I raced back to my room to grab my phone off my nightstand. I quickly tapped into my phone app and dialed my mother's number, but to my surprise, a ring sounded from somewhere far off in the house in time to the rings echoing out of my own phone. I stepped out into the hallway and followed the noise until it led me to the guest room where I was surprised to find a duffle bag with my mom's phone tucked in the side.
A slight frown came to my face just as the faint sound of laughter carried up the back set of stairs.
"Grandma, I think I hear your phone. Should I go get it before it wakes up Gram?" Faith asked as I made my way down the back set of stairs to the kitchen and found her sitting on top of the island. She lifted her legs just enough for Hope to get into the cabinet beneath her and grab a bowl.
Over at the table, my mother, Grace, and Jason were surrounded by old photobooks and smiling.
"That's you as a baby?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, I think that was at the hospital like a couple of hours after I was born," Grace smiled and nodded.
"I thought my sister was small when she was born, but you were teeny tiny," he exclaimed and she giggled. "And you already had tiny little curly hair! Our daughter is going to be a doll someday, I swear."
