Beep

Beep

Beep

Where the hell was I?

Beep

Beep

I focused on the sound that was piercing through my head making it difficult to think about anything but the throbbing I felt there. I had never experienced a pain like it, every ounce of my body hurt.

I needed to open my eyes to see where I had found myself but I was a little scared of what I might find. The last thing I remembered was being rocked in someones arms. How did I go from that to where ever I was now?

My eyes fluttered open but the light was too bright.

"Tilly?" A voice whispered from beside me.

"Tilly, sweetheart are you awake?" It was my mum. Was I at my parents house? As my surroundings came into focus it was clear where I was.

Hospital

I slowly looked around with the little movement I could make. Sat next to my bed was my mum and dad and at the bottom of my bed was Mike. Each ones face was strained with dark circles under their eyes. I was hooked up to a monitor that was making the loud beep sound that I wish would stop.

"w... w... What happened?" I managed to croak out.

Mike diverted their eyes, he couldn't look at me. My mum had a silent tear rolling down her face. My mum was in her late sixities, she was still incredibly attractive with short, brown, curled hair. Her style was classic and she would never be seen until she was appropriately done up. At this moment, she did look herself.

She was a fantastic mum. She was always the first to sign up for the PTA events and never missed any of my school plays. Up until four years ago my mum and I were incredibly close. More recently, we only spent time together when I felt guilty and went round for tea.

It was my dad who spoke first.

"I think you're going to have to tell us that Tilly." His voice was uneasy and he couldn't quite meet my eyes. He looked disappointed. My dad also retained his good looks. I could see why my mum had as she described it fallen head over heels in love with him. As he had aged he'd gained a little weight around the middle but he still carried himself with such confidence. He wasn't as openly loving as my mum, he showed his love in other ways like coming out in the freezing cold to change your tyre without grumbling.

I tried to speak, but I had no words to say.

My dad shook his head, he looked at me as if he had no idea who I was. His eyes were blank, they didn't have that twinkle in them that they normally held when he looked at me, his little princess. He took my mums hand and helped her to stand, she buried her face in his shoulder and he led her away. Neither of them said goodbye.

Mike was the only one left.

"I have always tried to be there for you Tilly. Always. But what you put us all through last night is not something I can stand by." He spoke calmly, there was no emotion to his words.

"The hospital phoned mum when they brought you in by ambulance. It was 1am! They hadn't got a clue what had happened. They thought you'd fainted. Mum was hysterical when they gave us your blood results."

"You had enough cocaine in your systems to kill you. You're lucky that scum bag found you in time and had the sense to call an ambulance otherwise we'd be visiting you in the morgue. He was here last night by the way but he disappeared as soon we turned up. A real catch you've got there Tilly." He looked at his feet and all I wanted was for him to hug me and tell me it would all be ok.
