The Ministry

The year was 1927 and today was a normal day. Newt and I sat on a bench in the Ministry waiting for something to happen. The ministry was very big and had lots of people in it. Most of them were grumpy and busy with work. But some, especially those who knew me, would smile and say hello as they passed. I was used to being here. The ministry always wanted to know where and when I was so that I wouldn't get into trouble. Today someone was going to question me- no big deal they did that every now and again. Newt however, was going to some kind of meeting about New York.

There was a rustling coming from Newt's pocket. He carefully lifted up his arm and Pickett was hanging off the second button. Newt and I stared at him for a few moments before the button and Pickett fell to the floor. The button rolled onto the carpet. The moment it fell on it's side Both Newt and Pickett ran and lunged at it. Newt had his hand on it and Pickett wined frustrated with his little arms on top. Newt then saw the pair of shoes. Leta was standing over him. Pickett crawled up Newt's arm and into his pocket while Newt stood up. He was confused for a moment that when he lifted his hand and the button wasn't there. I got off the bench and made the button float out of my hand into his pocket. I had been practicing. Both Leta and Newt smiled at that. There was a kind of awkwardness about them. Before they could start talking a man came over to me and told me to follow him.

I followed the man away from Newt into a small room for my assessment. I was rarely told my assessor's name and they changed every time. There was a table in the room and two chairs either side. I sat on one and the man sat on the other. The ministry were very careful about who I talked with while on their ground because they didn't want me to turn against them or get any bad ideas.

"So, lets get started eh?" the man pulled out a few sheets of paper and a quill and put them on the table. "What can you do?"

"Shapeshift into a dragon and move light objects," I watched the man write down what I had said.

"Good, and is Mr. Scamander caring for you properly?"

"Yes," I answered without hesitation.

"Have you made contact with any other family members?" he meant my mother but I didn't even know if she was alive. Last time I saw her was about seven years ago. I remember a bright light hit her and her fall to the ground but I never checked. I had already turned to run away from the men who made it. "No," I answered. "Unless you count Theseus." He was my uncle but I didn't see him often.

"Last time you came you said that you were looking for a wand, did you have any luck?" he asked with a friendly smile.

"We've given up now," For some reason wands didn't work for me. They seemed to turn to sticks in my hands and no matter how hard I waved them, no spell came out. This was the last question before the fun bit. The man put down his quill and looked at me.

"Good so far, now could you lift up the Quill without touching it and write your name on this paper?" he slid a blank piece of paper across the table. I moved my hand under the table as if I was grabbing the quill and moving it like Newt had taught me to. I focused as hard as I could on the quill and slowly managed to pick it up and scribble on the paper. To be able to read it would be a real talent.

"That's all we have for today. Do you want me to take you to your father?" he asked picking up the papers and walking to the door.

"No, I know the way thank you," he held the door open to let me out and I went back to the bench. I went down the corridor where Leta had taken Newt until I heard his voice behind a door. He sounded annoyed. I put my head near the door in hope that I'd hear the words but then the doors burst open and Newt stepped out with Theseus following close behind. Newt was keen to get away and I had to jog to keep up with him.

"Newt," Theseus called sternly but not shouting. Newt slowed down and I held on to his coat, a bit startled at his sudden burst of anger. "Do you think I like the idea of Grimmson any more than you?" Theseus was angry at Newt so I guessed that the travel ban hadn't been lifted but there was something else bothering him.

"listen I don't want to hear how the ends justify the means, Theseus," Newt began.

"I think you're gonna have to pull your head out the sand!" Theseus walked right up to Newt and stared at him directly in the eyes.

"Okay, right, here we go. What a selfish, irresponsible..." Newt answered with the voice of a man who had seen this before.

"You know, the time is coming when everyone is gonna have to pick a side," Theseus put a hand on Newt's shoulder. "Even you."

"We don't do sides," I stared at Theseus forgetting that humans aren't threatened by direct eye contact. He sighed and Newt and I turned to leave but Theseus called us. Newt didn't turn at once rather frustrated that his brother wouldn't let us go.

"Come here," Theseus walked up to Newt and hugged him tight. Newt just froze. He muttered something to quiet for me to hear. Then Theseus knelt down to talk to me. He put a hand on my shoulder. There were rules in the ministry made especially for me but Theseus, being my uncle, could break most of them. "Now you tell me if he does anything stupid OK?" he smiled as if he had just made a joke. Most kids would love the chance to tell on their parents but not me. I just took Newt's hand and we walked out.

It was cold and I could tell rain was on the way. We hadn't got far before I noticed a man was following us. Why couldn't we just leave in peace? Newt had seen him too. He pulled me behind a corner before muttering a spell that sent wind to blow the man away. I giggled a little. We turned to look down where we had hidden to see a floating glove. It pointed to the top of a building. Newt seemed to notice something but quickly turned me around so I couldn't look.

"Right let's do a little disaperateing practice," he looked down the ally way before continuing. "I recon you have about two minutes of fly time before anyone sees you," I shifted and hid in a shadow so no passing muggles would see me. I carefully watched Newt take the glove and disaperate. Most people don't know but for a very short period of time you can look at the twisted mess of the person about to disappear and see where they are trying to go. The average human eye can't pick this up but some dragons can see in slow motion and luckily for me I could choose when I wanted to.  For a short moment I could see what looked like the top of a cathedral. I looked around and saw something similar with two figures stood at the top. Now I just had to get there in two minutes. It took a few tries but quickly managed. I flew up as quickly as I could and landed just as the second man cast a spell that sent a thick mist down on London. I shifted, panting, and realized that the second man was Dumbledore.
