CHAPTER 5

"Some roads aren't meant to be traveled alone."

"So, way long before people started to keep track of what year it was, there were these brothers; Cain and Abel." she related.

"Yeah, I know. Cain killed Abel and was cast out of Eden." he said sharply.

"Yeah well what you don't know is that he was possessed when he killed his brother." she replied sarcastically. He immediately snapped his head in her direction. "Ooohh, now I have your attention! Once he left the Garden he found Lilith, Adam's first wife. She taught him about real magik and together they found the secret of immortality. Once they were eternal, the pair began a campaign to eliminate the supernatural creatures of the world. The only problem is they came across a demonic entity that revealed that Lilith was the one who gave birth to the evils of the world. She tried to explain what happened but Cain wanted nothing to do with her. He slew the entity and left her behind. At least that's what the legends of the Order say."

"Ok I'm not even gonna try and fight it anymore. I have a feeling the world's only going to get weirder. So what happened between the two of them? Did they ever meet up again and try to work it out? Did he kill her? And how did she give birth to the evils of the world?" he grilled her.

"Relax! We've got a long flight." she laughed. "Even the Order doesn't know what happened to them. There have been reports through the years about both of them, but as far as I know they are still mad at each other over the whole thing. Nobody really knows for sure, but Cain's Journal was the first book used by the Order. It helped to identify, detain, and eliminate many supernatural threats that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. The only story about her birthing evil I ever heard was that she got impregnated by the First Evil. Some versions say it was her choice, others say she was raped but they all say she gave birth to many, if not all, of the evils of this world."

"So Cain is one of the good guys? I mean once he left Eden there wasn't much talk of him in the Bible. So he just left his journal for us and abandoned someone he had been with for years and disappeared?" he asked her.

"Nobody's really sure where he is today or why he didn't take his journal. He disappeared around the Dark Ages when the Divide happened. The legend says that was the last sighting of either of them. They used the most powerful magik ever conceived to separate the world of humans and the world of the supernatural. When that happened they both disappeared from history. Nobody's sure why he left her or what even happened to them after that. Since then the Order has tried to police both sides of the Veil. There have been a few times that things have gotten out of control, but for the most part the empires on the other side of the Veil want the same thing we want. The world is a chaotic place and it's a small number that actively upsets the balance. Most try and find ways to simply shift the balance in their favor."

"Wait, there are Empire's on the other side of the Veil? As in more than one?" he questioned, shocked.

"Well yeah, most are mirrors of the country they occupy in the real world. I try not to focus on the politics of the people on the other side." she answered. "Some are like the Dark Age equivalent of the country they are in, like England. Many towns on that side of the Veil in England choose to stay in that level of technology. That's not to say they are weak by any means. England has produced more Magi and creatures that are strong in magik than almost anywhere else."

"Why England?" he asked, perplexed.

"Because of the Ley Lines, they actually show on this side of the Veil as magnetic fields. At least that's what scientists say they are, but scientists have been able to map most of the Ley Lines on the planet which has helped The Order watch potential sites for breaches."
