CHAPTER 28

"Courage is not the same as fighting someone stronger than you."

Beathen glanced around the corner searching for hostiles. Thankfully, it seemed they had been able to slip by the few that remained in the abandoned structure. Even though they were roughly forty feet underground at this point, Beathen could swear he heard the fighting from the surface. As they continued down one of the many dusty hallways, Ash stopped with a visible chill running down her spine.

"What is it lass?" Ruaraidh whispered while Beathen watched their flank.

"I'm not sure. Just this feeling of evil." she cringed.

"Well we are in a mass grave surrounded by a bunch of beast da want ta kill us. I'm pretty sure there is evil a burstin here." Ruaraidh sighed impatiently.

"No! Something almost primordial. Like an avatar of evil itself, and it's just in the next room." she pointed.

"Well then I say we knock first." Beathen smiled, holding up three pounds of C-4.

...

"I think it's about time we beat a hasty retreat my dear." Gudahi yelled over the din of battle.

"This is why we didn't work out you know. When things get a little difficult you just turn tail and run." Clara shouted back as she rode the collapsing body of a Rakshasas to the ground.

"That's not fair we have never had anything like this happen before. Even when we were dating. Plus it's not running away. I believe the term is regrouping." He lamented

"Is that sorrow I hear in your voice or is that just ringing in my ear?" she asked, smiling from ear to ear.

"As much as I would love to have another discussion about us don't we have more pressing issues?" Gudahi questioned, firing several more shotgun blasts.

"If we don't get some help soon we won't be able to talk about it again." Her remark made them both lose their smiles for a second as the gravity of it sank in. Gudahi stared into her pale green eyes. For the first time in ages he felt himself being drawn to her. As though the universe was trying to tell him to spend their last moments together. Leaning forward he could feel the heat coming off of her.

[BOOM]

They both jerked their heads toward the explosion that left a four-foot hole where an unlucky group of enemies had been standing. Several of the Rangers ran forward struggling to carry the heavy packs they were laden with. Captain Maxwell was the first to reach the pair.

"Looked like you could use a hand." he announced as he dropped behind their makeshift wall of fallen trees and other debris.

"I thought we told you to keep the perimeter solid?!" Clara scolded.

"All due respect ma'am, if you guys fall we don't stand a chance. So here are the dumbest volunteers your ever gonna get. Besides we have roughly sixty pounds of C-4 I'd really love to see if it can blow up some were-wolves." The Ranger captain replied with a smile

"I appreciate the gesture Captain but what's your plan for getting them on the were-wolf? It's not gonna hold still for you." asked Gudahi.

"I was thinking a variation on an old trick from the GI field manual. It's called a sticky bomb." Maxwell replied, almost giddy.

"Is that why your men are breaking into that Napa Auto parts?" Clara wondered out loud.

"Yes ma'am. They are grabbing as much grease and bags as they can carry. We're going to stick it to the beast with the help of the grease. Or at least long enough to detonate it." he informed them.
