CHAPTER 6

"Ability has no school."

"The Great Spirit is not perfect: it has a good side and a bad side. Sometimes the bad side gives us more knowledge than the good side." What does this Lakota proverb mean? Is it saying that the ends justify the means? Is it giving us license to do whatever we need to accomplish a mission? Thoughts anyone?" asked Professor Gorman.

Ash jumped in before anyone could even raise a hand. "Professor I understand what the saying means, but it's the insinuation that troubles me."

"And which insinuation is that?" asked the Professor.

"That we should strive to do what we think is the best given the situation, information, etc. Except that we should also use what information we can get from our enemies, no matter how unethically they may have come by it." she replied, concerned.

"Well that is an interesting question, isn't it? Should we ignore vital information just because our enemies, for example, the Nazi's, gave it to us? Well if we had done that, the world of medicine would be a much different place. The experiments that Josef Mengele performed were horrendous crimes against all sentient species that should never be condoned or repeated. Does that mean we should throw out the progress and understanding he learned from them? The Order didn't when the time came. We made sure he is being punished for all eternity, but the things he learned jumped medicine alone forward thirty years. In my opinion, we should use the information if it has use. Though we should not only condemn the way they came about the information but the individuals themselves. As you all should know by now, the Order was responsible for the formation of the Thule Society. It was formed long before the Nazi regime came about. Had it not been for the Vampire uprising on both sides of the Veil we would have not only cut ties much earlier but the Nazis wouldn't have had the many magikal artifacts they looted from all of Europe." he answered.

"So what you're saying is that if we come across a profane relic that can kill a greater demon, then we should use it because it may be the only thing that can stop it. Just because we didn't make it we shouldn't discard the thing itself. The method perhaps, but not the thing, is that correct?" asked Beathen.

"Slightly generalized but yes that is a safe summation. We have many relics that are undoubtedly evil in their creation. Many of the reasons we keep them is so that we can understand the method of making it, no matter how profane or disturbed. So we can either destroy any new ones or prevent their creation altogether. And with that, our time for today is over." the Professor concluded, as the timer on his desk sounded. Professor Gorman had joked the first day of class that he had an egg timer on his desk so he was less likely to ramble for hours on end. Then class had started and the timer went off in what felt like three minutes. It was actually an hour. Most of the class had set timers of their own just to be safe after that. He was a great teacher that everyone enjoyed, but he was the definition of long-winded.

It had been an interesting two months at the school since their arrival at The Enochian Academy of Divine Arts. Today was an important day for Beathen in particular because he started the "normal" training for a Chevalier. Ethics was interesting, but the class he was most looking forward to was The Use of Magikal Items 101. This was the class that not only taught them how to use charms and other relics but issued them when you were cleared on their use. The main ones he was looking forward to were called the "Eyes and Tongue of Thoth". The Eyes let you read any language known to the god Thoth. The Tongue worked similarly to the Eyes except it allowed the wielder to not only speak any language but to understand them as well.
