CHAPTER 7

"If you can't change your fate, change your attitude."

A few days later Beathen still hadn't heard anything from Instructor Attar. Making him more paranoid with each passing day.

"So you ever hear anything about your charms training?" asked Ash.

"I haven't heard anything yet. I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong. Or if they're gonna lock me up in some dungeon in the middle of nowhere." he admitted.

"If they were going to lock you up you wouldn't be here now. I really don't think that's going happen so lighten up. You're way too uptight right now. I mean, when was the last time you went out to relax? You haven't been outside of the school since you got here. You're getting burnt out. And you have to admit a flaming tattoo is kinda cool." demanded Ash with a smile.

The thoughts going through his head were about everything but relaxation. This was a world that he was slowly beginning to understand. The more he understood the more he felt like he didn't know enough. Maybe she's right. Maybe I do need to get out and relax for a night. "Alright Ash, I'll go out with you guys tonight. What are we all doing?" finally relenting to her months of pestering.

"Well we can go out to dinner, then I think everyone is going out to a few bars in the area. There's a great place to eat nearby. If you don't love the food, then you are some kind of freak. Meet me at the entrance at five." Ash quickly beat a hasty retreat before he could change his mind.

Beathen sat alone with his thoughts for a while trying to make sense of the latest development in his crazy new life. The more he pondered the tattoo issue he felt that it was a good thing, but that there was still something else that loomed on the horizon. He wasn't sure if it had to do with the tattoo or if something else was happening. He learned to trust his instincts years ago, but something about this was different. He shook off the feelings as best he could and went to his room to get ready for the night's events.

The rooms they were given during training were about the size of a small apartment. It had a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom. Going from a military barracks shared with twenty others to a private apartment took some getting used to, but it was definitely a good change. Beathen took a long relaxing shower trying to wash away some of his troubles. He sent an email to Aunt Clara to keep her updated on what was going on and to see if she knew anything about it. Hopefully she knew something, but he wasn't getting his hopes up just in case.

Opening the door to his closet Beathen heard a loud banging on the door. He hoped it was Instructor Attar with some kind of answer. Good or bad he just wanted to know what the hell was going on with his own body.

"You take more time to get ready than my grandmother and she's 400 years old!" beamed Ash as he opened the door.

"What? I had to take a shower and do a couple other things." he argued.

"And you don't even compliment a girl when she shows up at your door! You know, it's no wonder you're single." she chided him.

He had noticed that she looked like a goddess in a sun dress. Her red hair perfectly accenting the black and peach floral print dress. He had almost stammered incoherently as he opened the door. Thankfully the training they had all received to control their emotions in stressful situations had more uses than just combat.

"I did notice your dress but I just didn't know what to say." he replied dryly, trying to draw her in.

"Now what the hell is that supposed to mean?" she shrieked.
