"We'll talk to you all soon. Thank you for having us." I said to some cousins, preparing to head back to our own house.
"Kids, say goodbye." Shawn told our two daughters, motioning them towards their extended family. As they ran to say goodbye, Shawn stepped closer to me. "Have everything?" He asked me.
I nodded. "Already grabbed the gifts. Did you remember to move the elf on the shelf before we left?" I asked him.
He chuckled. "Of course I did. I covered it in tape and pieces of wrapping paper." He said.
I laughed. "You can be very creative when you want to be." I said while wrapping my arms around his muscular arm.
Finally, our kids came running back.
"Hurry!" The youngest shouted. "We have to get home before santa!" She yelled.
Shawn dramatically covered his face like he was surprised. "Oh my god, how could I forget? We need to get home now." He said, scooping up the girls. They both erupted into giggles as Shawn carried them out of the house and back to our car.
"Drive quickly, mommy!" They yelled to me as I started the car.
Shawn turned back to them from the passengers seat. "Okay, both of you watch the sky. We need to make sure he doesn't fly past us!" He told them.
They both nodded quickly. "What happens if he gets home before us?" The oldest asked.
Shawn cringed. "I don't even want to think about it!" He turned to me with a big smile. "But don't worry, mommy's gonna get us home in time."
I giggled. "I might've already talked to Santa and told him to give us a head start."
The girls giggled as we drove off towards our house. Shawn continued to amuse them, telling them all about how he once caught Santa when he was young.
"What did he look like?" One of the girls asked.
"Well, he was wearing the big red suite, and had a long white beard. He glowed like magic, and left glitter everywhere he stepped. He laughed his famous laugh," and Shawn imitated Santas laugh, "and placed all the presents under the tree. Then, he climbed up my chimney, and he was gone."
Both of the girls stared at Shawn in awe. "I wanna see Santa!" One exclaimed.
Shawn nodded. "Maybe one day you will." He said with a smile.
Once we arrived home, the girls made sure to check that Santa hadn't come while we were away. They set up the small plate of cookies that I knew Shawn would be eating later before taking their showers and getting into bed.
"Goodnight girls." Shawn said as he tucked them in.
"Wait, are you and mommy going to sleep?" One asked.
Shawn gave me a smile. "Yes. We don't want to be up with Santa comes." He replied.
"Make sure you two go to sleep. Santa will know if you're awake." I added.
The next morning, the girls woke Shawn and I by running into our room and shouting, "santa came! santa came!"
We walked downstairs to find the presents santa had brought. Toys and stuffed animals and all sorts of boxes. But the girls were more excited to see the glitter shaped footprints that had been left on the floor, leading from our chimney to the tree.
"Wow." They said, touching the glitter. "Santa really came."
I turned to look at Shawn, giving him a big smile. "When did you do that?" I asked.
He chuckled. "I didn't, Santa did." He said, winking at me before joining the girls. "Wow! It's the same glitter I saw when I was little!" He exclaimed.
I watched my small family obsess over the glitter while laughing. They were everything I wanted for Christmas.
