My friend had caught me right as I was leaving my fifth-period history class, right in the bustling hallways where tons of people had already gathered. My eyes landed on him quickly, it wasn't hard considering he was the one holding a white poster board with sticky letters and a bouquet of pink roses.
"So, will you go with me?" He asked.
"I- what?"
His smile was so wide and excited, and everyone was surrounding us, I felt my heartbeat picking up.
"Do you want to go to prom... with me?" He asked, his smile only faltering for a moment.
My eyes darted around the crowd, smiles just as big as the boy across from me's surrounded me, and made me panic.
"Um, can I... think about it?" I asked awkwardly, trying not to focus on the watching eyes.
His smile immediately fell by he nodded slowly. "Uh, yeah, sure. Just... let me know," he replied awkwardly as well. This was clearly not the response he wanted, but fortunately, he started to walk away. Just as quickly though, he turned back to me. "Oh," he said, trying to hand me the poster board and flowers. "These are technically yours."
I smiled lightly, though I'm sure it didn't reach my eyes. I took the poster board and bouquet from him, not wanting to have to make this any awkward. I'd stash it in my locker or something I guess. His eyes turned up a bit when I took it, making my heartache.
Most of the crowd had already cleared and the rest went with it as I turned to walk away. Hopefully, no one would be talking about this—this wasn't something I wanted to travel around the school.
I walked through the crowded school hallways quickly, just trying to get to my locker so I could put the gifts away before I saw-
"Shawn!" I gasped as he stepped out of a classroom, nearly causing me to knock right into him.
He grabbed my arms quickly, steading me, laughing as he did.
"Slow down, Usain Bolt. Why are you in such a hurry?" He asked, still laughing his melodic laugh.
I shrugged quickly. I held the poster and roses against my legs, keeping them low to the ground so that if I was lucky he wouldn't notice it.
It would seem that my luck had run out though because his eyes darted straight to the poster. He glanced back to my nervous eyes and then in one quick motion, he pulled the poster from my hands and held me back with one arm as I protested. He ignored though. He turned the poster around to show the sticky letter that were asking me to prom.
My heart was beating rapidly. He frowned as his eyes read over the poster. I didn't say anything, hoping he would just laugh and then tease me like he usually did, but that didn't happen. He slowly put the poster back in my hands and without meeting my eyes, he whispered a soft "I gotta go," before he was walking away from me.
I stood awkwardly in the hallway, at a loss for what had just happened. The rest of the day passed slowly, the classes seemed to drag on. Shawn was nowhere to be seen at lunch or in our eighth-period class together. He was either skipping to avoid me or had actually left school, which I thought was crazy. Could he seriously be angry at me for this?
Once school was out, I drove home sadly. My parents weren't back from work yet so I snuggled into the couch. After aimlessly staring at the tv show I was watching for a bit, I decided to text Shawn.
From Me: Shawn, text me when you get this, can we talk?
I waited almost half an hour for a reply but it didn't come. Right as I was beginning to grow annoyed at him for actually be angry with me, my doorbell rang.
I sighed as I climbed off the couch, prepared to tell whoever was trying to sell me something that I wasn't interested. I stared confused at the brown-haired boy in front of me after opening the door.
He stood across from me, holding a small poster where he had clearly handwritten in sharpie the words "Let me take you to prom."
"Shawn?" I whispered, wanting him to say something.
He sighed deeply. "I know it's not anything special. I don't have pretty sticker letters or roses for you. I can't even promise you a better night than he can give you, but say yes to me. I'm sorry for leaving you there, but I didn't want to hear about you going to prom with someone else for the rest of the day, because—I wanted to take you to prom."
My cheeks turned up in a smile as I stepped closer to him, quickly taking his face in my hands. He stared at me in shock while I kissed his unprepared lips quickly. "Of course I'll go to prom with you." I kissed him again, and this time he was ready for it. He dropped the poster and held my wait, moving his lips rhythmically with mine.
