I sat in the waiting room alone as a bunch of officers sat on the other side. Officer Adams offered to sit with me but I declined. I needed time to absorb everything that had happened. Eva would never be the same. My dad might die. I couldn't even think that way. I grabbed my phone and quickly texted Austin.

From Colton: 7:31 PM

where r u

From Austin: 7:32 PM

stuck in traffic. getting there as soon as we can. hang in there. any news?

From Colton: 7:34 PM

not yet. it didn't look good when I was at the scene. eva's okay, with the nurses for observation.

From Austin: 7:36 PM

I'm happy shes safe. and dad's strong, he can pull-thru. just don't lose hope.

From Colton: 7:37 PM

I'm trying. harder than you think.

From Austin: 7:38 PM

I know. just keep trying.

From Colton: 7:38 PM

hows mom??

From Austin: 7:40 PM

not good. she hasn't said a word to me since she told me what happened. she just keeps randomly screaming about the traffic.

From Colton: 7:41 PM

just be there for her. make sure she doesn't do anything dangerous, okay? you know how she gets in these types of situations.

From Austin: 7:42 PM

I know. it'll be fine. love you, bro.

From Colton: 7:42 PM

love you too.

I set down my phone and rubbed my head. I heard footsteps coming up to me and I looked up. It was a police officer, not Officer Adams, and a nurse.

"May we sit?" the officer asked and I nodded.

"Is your mom coming?" the nurse asked.

"Yeah, she's stuck in traffic," I told him.

"Good," she said. "We have good news, Eva is just fine. We decided to remove the cast early, she's wearing a boot now. Some bumps and bruises and scraping around the wrists, but she's fine. I cleaned up all the wounds, but we still have one more thing to take care of," she explained.

"What's that?" I asked.

"We have to question her. I know it seems like the last thing she would want right now, but we have to if we want the right people to be punished for the right crimes," the officer explained gently.

"And this has to happen now," I asked.

"Yes. Everything is fresh in her mind. It should not take too long, but you can see her right after," he promised.

"Can I be in the room with her?" I asked.

"She requested for you to not be present," the officer told me and I shook my head.

"We won't be long, we just wanted to inform you of what was going on," he finished.

"You should be happy with how it turned out, it could have been a lot worse. She has no severe injuries, which I would call a miracle in a case like this," the nurse told me.
