When I got home it was only an hour after school got out (about 4). That means I have an hour to do my homework that the evil ninja teachers gave me, and an hour to get ready for my date. I walked in the door to be greeted by my mom. She had short blonde hair, and blue eyes like mine. She also had freckles, but she had more than me.

“Hey what’s up with that smile? I haven’t seen you smile like that in years.” She said surprised. She was right I’ve never been so happy. The only other time I was this happy was before the accident. My dad died in a bus accident just about 6 years ago. He always took the bus to work, because he never liked driving. The bus hit a patch of ice and they rolled off the road into a ditch. Only 4 people died. They were my dad, an elder woman, a little boy and his mother. It has been hard for us these few years, but we are getting through it.

“Oh it’s nothing. Is it okay if I hang out with a friend for a while tonight?” I asked her. I made the biggest cheesiest smile possible.

“I have no problem with it. Just be home before 10:30. You have school tomorrow.”She said.

I ran upstairs and did my homework. Whenever I did homework I would blast music. For some reason it helped me concentrate. When I finished a grabbed my phone and texted Joey

Me: Hey it’s Maya!

I sent it along with my address. I grabbed my favorite green blouse and black skinny jeans. I put them on and went to the bathroom. I straightened my hair that had waves from me playing with it all day. I did my make-up carefully trying to not make one mistake. When I finished I put my phone in my pocket and walked downstairs.

“Well don’t you look pretty.” My mom said. “This is a boy coming over isn’t it?”

“Maybe.” I said blushing. “It’s no big deal.” I lied. This was definitely a big deal. I am going on a date with my new boyfriend. He was now my first kiss. I couldn’t mess this up.

The doorbell rang and I walked to the door to answer it. I opened the door to see Joey standing there with a dozen white roses and chocolate. He wore a white collared shirt with a black tie, and he was wearing dress pants. He made me feel a little underdressed.

“Hey.” I said with a smile.

“Hey beautiful I got you something.” He said handing me the roses and chocolate. Then he gave me a hug.

“Bye mom!” I said trying to get out of the house before she embarrassed me. She grabbed the doorknob before the door shut all the way.

“Don’t think you can get away that easily.” She said pulling the door open. “So who is this young man?” She asked.

“This is Joey. I am going to take the flowers and chocolates to my room real quick since you trapped us for a while.” I ran upstairs and put them on my bed. I admired them for only a second and then races back downstairs. “I’m ready to go.”

“Okay hun, see you later. Joey I’m glad you can join us for family night tomorrow.” She said as she shook his hand. I couldn’t believe what I heard. Family night was the most embarrassing nights. My mom tries to act cool and I pretend she is. There were never guests involved. Although, it wasn’t much of a family night than just me and my mom talking and messing around.
