Catalina

"Hey...Ade." I looked down at a grinning Adelaide as she looked between us. "Won't you tell Mark and John you have a daddy?" I tried to look for any sign of wincing on Alexander's face but found none.

"Oh yes! I have to thank Jeanie too." She stood up instantly.

So, it was Jeanie, obviously.

"Jane...listen, please keep Adelaide occupied for an hour or two. It's urgent." I called her right after Ade left. "And tell Jeanie she's got some explanation to do."

"Didn't we use a condom?" That is the first question he asked once we've met after ages.

"Well, duh." I point in the direction where Ade left.

"How could you-why didn't-" He ran a hand through his hair, getting up.

"What do you mean?! You fucked equally." I threw my hands up in the air.

"I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about this." He took a step forward making my heart drop instantly.

"What? What do you mean?"

"How could you keep my daughter away from me all these years?"

"How could I? Weren't you the one who hated kids that day?"

"Just because I hated kids that day doesn't mean you'd keep my daughter away from me, Catalina!" He yelled,  stepping forward so he was now in front of me.

"I-I was afraid Alex." I lost it, the tears started falling down from my eyes and blurring my vision. "I was afraid you'd make me abort."

"Why would I do that?!" His hands were on my shoulders and after that night, I felt electricity surge through my body today. "I mean...yes...the idea of a kid would be...dangerous...but I would not-"

"I'm sorry...I was scared I was so stupid then and-" Before I could form anymore words, I found myself sobbing uncontrollably. And then he was holding me tight till all the tears are gone. Once it was over, he lead me to the couch and we sat together silently till I could finally breath consciously.

"What do we do now?" I was the first one to speak.

"I want my kid." That's all he said, till the door opened revealing Adelaide with Jane in toe.

"That's my Daddy!" Ade squealed, bringing Jane.

"Hello..." Jane walked towards us and we stood up.

"Hi...Mr. Disappeared Daddy here." He flashef her a smile, forwarding his hand for a shake which she accepted laughing.

"I want my kid." He stepped back and murmured next to me.

"Hey...Ade...Why don't you go with Jane and bring Daddy some of her chocolate chip cookies?"

"Yes!" She grabbed Jane's hand and then looked up at Alex. "You'll love it."

"I'm sure I will." He smiled at her as they left.

"How can you just want Adelaide?" I turned back to him in surprise.

"What's wrong with wanting my own kid?"

"You're engaged!"

"Fuck..." And as if realisation finally hit him, he flopped back down on the couch, his head buried in his hands. "That changes everything..."

And then, there was a long silence as we sat deep in thought, digging into our own minds to find a solution hidden somewhere. Although, I was not even thinking for a solution properly, I was  just trying to control myself from losing it and hitting myself with a cane for being so stupid then.

"You know what?" He straightened up. "I don't care. I don't fucking care if I've got a damn fiànce waiting back at my house. I want my kid, I'll have her."

"But how ca-"

"Even if it means taking her away from you." He finished, getting up.

"How can you do that? I'm her mother." I followed his actions, facing him.

"Well, all these years I was her father too, but you kept her away from me. Learn to do the same now."

"Alex...if you are doing this to take a revenge from me-"

"No I'm not." He cut me off instantly. "I feel connection with her, okay? Her voice...it makes me feel alive and joyous...something I've never felt since ages, and that too when we've met since like two days. I can't let her go."

"Well then let me make it very clear. You, are not taking my daughter away from me. If she goes anywhere, she goes with me. Yet, od you want to go ask her once, you are more than welcome." I shrugged, both of us knowing that she would not go away without me.

"Mommy!" And, Adelaide was back. Why couldn't the two of them keep her away for a few minutes? "Did you see it?"

"See what baby?" Walking to pick her up, I furrowed my eyebrows, but before I could do that, she was in Alexander's arms.

"The rainbow...just like you said it would come if we met."

"Yeah...I saw it, it was beautiful." I smiled at her, caressing her cheek.

"Just like you." She let out a laugh and it was in that moment that he-Alexander-noticed me, or that's what it felt like. His mesmerising eyes found way to mine, making me look down in embarrassment.

"Where-where did you learn such a cheesy thing from, huh?" I tucked an invisible strand of hair behind my ear, feeling my cheeks get heated.

"Jane said it to Jeanie." She laughed again as Alex threw her in the air and caught her back up.  Wait...is it just me or are his ears a bit pink too?

"Daddy! Won't you tell Mommy she's pretty?"

"Well-I...of course your Mommy is pretty sweetie." He stammered and I got ready to dash into the kitchen to hide my embarrassment.

"Then tell her." She urged.

"Erm...You are the most gorgeous, Catalina." His voice came out soft and husky and I tried not to let my thoughts drift away to that night.

"Yay!" Itwas as if the statement itself was a moment of celebration for her as she wriggled out of his arms and held our hands, pulling us out of the apartment. "Come! Let's go see the rainbow."

His eyes locked to mine as Adelaide drags us outside the apartment. They were still locked as she pulled us into the elevator. And in the elevator, she pulled us so close that our legs brushed and we pulled apart instantly. Thankfully, I was not the only one feeling the...electricity.

Let's hope she doesn't connect us more than the boundaries allow.
