I woke up in a white room, in a white bed with white curtains surrounding me. Clearly this place had a theme. A nurse entered, followed by Anthony, 2 Irons and Launi (I was glad to see her).
'How are you feeling?', Anthony asked in his usual jolly tone.
'Fine', I replied, unsure of what else to say. 'The surgery...'
'The surgery went perfectly, the source is out and locked up safe for use.' Launi assured me, gently.
That's when I noticed this peculiar lightness on my chest, I looked down and there was a blooded bandage wrapped around my torso, but one thing was for sure; my source was gone.
'Now, you will be weak as your body is not used to not carrying the source but rest assured all the vital organs and muscles are there, so you will be up and moving in about a day tops', Anthony stated.
As they turned to leave a sudden thought came to me,
'Is that it then?', they all turned at once.
'Sorry?' Anthony asked, confused.
'Is that all I'm here for?' I rephrased. They stared at me for a moment and then Anthony laughed. Actually laughed. This got my cogs turning.
'No my dear boy!' He chuckled, 'although your father hid that source in you it wasn't just for you to bring the source to us, it was also so we had YOU'.
I just stared at him like a dumb idiot. Then it hit me, so it wasn't just for my source! I still had a purpose. I could still help. My face lit up, then I caught myself, I wanted to look professional.
'Thank you' is all I could think of to say.
As they left, Launi turned back to me and, walking over to my bed, asked 'would you like anything to drink? The doctor says you can only have oil for now', she asked, with a tone of genuine friendliness. Although the source was gone, the rest of my core started beating like a drum. I willed her not to hear it.
'Yes please' I said, quietly, I didn't realise how tired talking made you.
'Ok'. and with a small smile, she was gone. 40 ticks later (I counted) she returned with a glass of oil. I took it and sipped on it as she proceeded to tell me the rest of the plan. Knock out the guards, sneak the machine through, drill the tunnel down where the Controller was, insert the source, have approximately 2 doboshes to get back to base and everyone will forget the war every started. Then a thought struck me,
'But will we be able to remember each other?'
Launi hesitated before saying, 'I... don't know. The source erases all memories of the war but leaves our lives so we'll know who we are we just... may loose memory of our days fighting alongside rebels, including each other.' Her voice turned sad as she finished her sentence, then he shot up and hurried out without another word. The next few days were all introductions, training, tweaking and planning. Everything had to be perfect. And I found myself getting closer to Launi every day...
