All the senior football players and cheerleaders lined up on the track with their families. Every sport has a night where they celebrate the seniors. All the cheerleaders wore sashes and tiaras.
Missy and her family were the first to walk out followed by two football players and their families. Next was Brandi and her dad. Ricky walked awkwardly with his parents before two cheerleaders walked down.
"Next we have both Luke and Leia Evans. They have both played for their varsity sports all four years of high school. They both made captain this year. We're going to miss you both next year."
Luke and I were on either side of mom. We smiled at the camera. Coach handed me a yellow rose. "Oh you both are so grown up," said mom. "I miss when y'all were babies."
"But we are much more fun now," said Luke. We both rolled our eyes. "Are we still doing that thing?"
"Yeah, when everyone is done." I looked over at Nick. He was holding Elena trying to get her to look at the camera. I walked over to the camera guy. "Elena, look at me, baby girl."
Elena giggled and started reaching out for me. The cameraman quickly snapped a photo. Nick walked over to me. I grabbed Elena from his arms. "I don't get how you're her favorite."
I turned away from him. Nick and I haven't really talked in a week. It's been too awkward. We're both still upset with each other. I kissed Elena's cheek. I handed her to Abuela. I walked over to the fence where mom was. "Are you staying?"
"Of course."
"Mabel there you are." A handsome man wearing an expensive suit walked up to us. He had short gelled up brown hair and a jawline that I knew my mom liked. "I'm glad I found you."
"Edward, what are you doing here?"
"Well, you said we couldn't go out tonight because you were watching this game and I decided to join you."
Mom sighed. "Leia this Edward Pruitt. Edward, this is my daughter Leia."
I shook his hand. "It's very nice to meet you, your mother has told me a lot about you."
"You too. I don't mean to be rude but I have a little performance to do." he smiled and nodded.
I walked away towards the other cheerleaders. Missy, Brandi, Dana, me, and two other cheerleaders were the only seniors on the team. This year we were having the senior football players doing a stunt with us before the game. Missy teamed up with Tyler and Freddy, Ryder and Brody got Dana, Ricky and Don got Brandi, the other guys split up to get the other girls, and Nick and Alvin got me.
Alvin walked up to me. I saw a brace on his hand. "Leia, I got hurt at practice yesterday. I can't do the stunt."
I smiled. "Don't worry about it."
Nick walked over to me. "Leia?" I turned to face him but I didn't look at him. "I can do it by myself, Corazón."
I looked up at him. "You wanna one man me?" I asked. He nodded. "Nick you haven't one manned me since freshman year. I'm bigger than I was freshman year." he looked me up and down slowly, not trying to be subtle. I slapped his arm. "You would drop me."
He rolled his eyes. "I'm bigger than I was freshman year too, Corazón. I wouldn't drop you and by the off chance I did, I'd catch you."
The girls called me over. I groaned. "Fine fine you can one man me." I grabbed his hand and brought him over to everyone. "Same counts just please don't drop me."
"1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8," yelled Missy. The cheerleaders were raised into the air by the football players. Nick threw me into the air and caught me. I smiled and waved at the crowd. "Now down, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8." we were then brought back down to the ground.
I blew out a breath of relief. "Oh thank god."
"Wow," he scoffed. "You really don't trust me."
"Nick-"
He took his hands away from my waist. "I gotta go play now. I'll see you later cor- Leia."
I quietly gasped. He walked over to the field with the other players. I walked over to Dana and Tessa. I grabbed Dana's hand, squeezing it. "What'd he say? What'd he do?"
"He started calling me Corazón and then he stopped," I whimpered. She sighed and pulled me in for a hug. "He's never done that. What if he hates me now?"
"He's just upset, you know that right?" I nodded. She gave me a small smile. "You two will makeup and it'll be alright."
"I want to be with him but I can't trust him."
"I don't know what to say." She wiped under my eyes as I started to tear up. "He's not going to be like that with you. He could never be like that with you." One of the football managers ran over to us. He handed me a note. "What is it?" I shrugged and opened it.
We need to talk. After the game, come to my room.
"It's from Nick," said Gil. "Do you want me to tell him anything?"
"Just tell him I said okay, thanks Gil." he nodded and ran back to the bench. I handed the note to Dana. She read it. "I should go right?"
"I think you two have a lot to talk about."
We won the game 34-21. Mom drove us home. I was going to shower but I decided to head over to Nick's. I knocked on the front door. Abuela opened it and smiled. "Hola niña, you here for Nick?"
"Yes ma'am, he asked me to come over."
"He's putting Elena down but you're welcome to wait in his room."
I smiled and nodded. I walked upstairs to his room. It was a typical guy's room. It had dark blue walls, black comforters, and black dressers with framed pictures and trophies on top of them. It smelled like his cologne in here. I sat down on his bed. "Shit Leia you scared me."
I looked up at him. He was still sweaty from the game and he didn't have a shirt on. I looked down at my lap. "I'm sorry, Abuela let me in."
"You don't have to apologize." he grabbed a shirt from the floor and shrugged it on. "Are you hungry? Did you eat dinner yet?"
"I'm okay. You wanted to talk to me?" He nodded. He walked into his closet and grabbed his guitar. "You're still playing?"
He nodded. He walked over to me sitting beside me. He strummed the guitar. "I found a song I like. It took me a while to learn it, I don't get how you and Dana memorize so many songs." I turned my body and crossed my legs. "We agreed that when we figured it out that we would tell each other so this is me telling you."
He started playing. I recognized the song right away. It was Little Things by One Direction. He sang through the song softly in order to not wake Elena. When he finished he set the guitar down beside him. I wiped a tear under my eye. "I don't know what to say, Nick."
"I like you, Leia. I like you a lot and I want to be with you. How can I prove to you that I've changed?"
I shook my head. "I like you too Nick but-"
"Corazón anything, I'll do anything."
"I don't know Nick." I stood up and started pacing back in forth trying to think. "Throw the game."
"What?"
"The playoff game. I know how much it means to you. If you throw the game, I'll know you mean it when you say you changed."
"Leia, I can't throw the game."
"You said you would do anything."
He put his head in his hands. "I can't throw the game, Leia. the team is counting on me, I mean obviously not just me but still." he looked up at me. "I want to prove myself to you but I can't do that."
"Then i'm sorry." I turned around and walked out of his room. I ran out of the house. I ran up to my bedroom. I slid down to the floor and cried.
