I can't believe my luck. First day of my new school and I already made a whole bunch of friends, some friendlier than others. I can't believe that just yesterday morning, I'd begged my dad not to send me to Goode. If he'd actually agreed not to, I would've missed such a big opportunity.
Last night was the most fun I'd had in a while. Piper had let us raid her kitchen and we played a brief game of truth or dare before the Stolls and Leo had decided they'd had enough and pranked us.
Now I stand in front of the mirror desperately trying to brush tangles out of my hair. I probably should've showered this morning, but I woke too late. After finally getting the tangles to cooperate, I hurry downstairs to the kitchen. I'm still not used to the new house, with its high roofs that seem to touch the sky. The island home was so much more cozy and comfortable.
"Good morning dad," I say when I reach the kitchen. My dad's a big, tall guy with a curly brown set of hair and beard.
"Hey." He doesn't talk much either.
I eat my cereal in silence. It's a rather pleasurable silence; not an awkward one.
"Do you like the school?" Dad asks. I can tell he's trying to be friendly after all the years he's forgotten about me.
"Yeah," I answer. We settle into a quietude again.
I quickly finish up my breakfast and pack for school. Then I run outside, praying I won't be late for the bus. Luckily, I make it just before it pulls up. When I get inside, the only seat left is beside Leonidas Valdez, or Repair Boy, as Piper told me. So I tentatively sit down on the edge of the seat.
"Hey Sunshine," Leo says, still conversing William Solace. Beside Will sits Rachel Elizabeth Dare. I met both of them yesterday. They're definitely nicer than Leonidas.
Will notices me. "Hi Cal!" From what I know of him, he's a pretty chill and laid back guy. He's also friends with pretty much the whole school, I've noted, saying hi to everyone at lunch yesterday.
Rachel smiles. "Hi Calypso." And like that, I talk with Rachel the rest of the bus ride, barely noticing Leonidas. Until the end of the ride.
"Hey Sunshine," he says, "how're you doin'?"
"Worse now, thanks to you." I glare.
"No need to be salty, Sunshine," he replies.
We arrive at Goode. I head to my homeroom, the history classroom, Ms. Clio's classroom.
A girl with brown hair looks up when I walk in and smiles. "Hello. Are you Calypso? I'm Katie, Travis' girlfriend."
"Yeah, I'm Calypso. You can call me Cal, though," I say. I sit down in the empty desk beside her. "How do you stand Travis? I've known him for a day and he's already on my nerves."
She laughs. "Once upon a time, I also couldn't stand him. Sometimes, I still can't stand him."
"I see you've met Katie," Hazel says, coming up behind us.
"Katie!" Travis' voice sounds. He bounds over and hugs Katie tightly. Then Travis looks at us sheepishly and kisses her.
"Travis! You're suffocating me!" Katie laughs. I smile and hear Hazel squeal. I hope I'll have a relationship like Katie and Travis', carefree and certain.
"Class, sit down, I have attendance to take," Ms. Clio interrupts. From what I know and what I hear, Ms. Clio's one of those teachers who give extra credit a lot, but is really strict when we don't hand in our assignments. After she takes attendance and the bell rings, we're dismissed to our next classes.
