Maya paced Phoenix's dark office, her mind racing. Nick...I'm so sorry. she thought. She had called Athena to let her know, but she didn't pick up. Where the hell was she?! She started to bite her nails as Trucy and Pearl watched her from the couch. "Mystic Maya?" Pearl spoke up finally. "What?!" Maya said in an unexpected, exasperated tone. Pearl was taken aback. Maya's eyes softened. "Sorry Pearly. What's up?" Pearl knew that her cousin didn't wish to be bothered on the present situation. Pearl didn't want to upset her by accidently making light of Phoenix's kidnapping, but she took a chance. "Mystic Maya, Mr. Nick will be okay. I promise. He's going to be fine. Mr. Edgeworth is on his way over and we will find him."
Maya turned to Pearl with tears swelling in her eyes. She took a minute to register Pearl's words. She certainly has matured. Maya gave Pearl a watery smile. "I...Thank you Pearly. Thanks for keeping my hopes up." Maya turned toward the big window out of Phoenix's office window. Pearly's right. She thought. Her hopes rising for a second. Nick, you'll be okay. I promise.
The front door of the office knocked briskly, which made Maya jump slightly. "I'll get it." Trucy said as she walked out of Phoenix's office. Maya shuddered. Just the thought of Phoenix running out of time to be alive terrified her. Her longtime partner, her best friend...her soulmate was out there somewhere, clinging to life. All the tears that she was holding back finally broke out of her eyes like a dam. She started to sob uncontrollably.
The memory of her being trapped in Matt Engarde's house was flooding back to her. Yes, the traumatic memory of being trapped in Engarde's house was awful but knowing that something similar was happening to Phoenix right now was somehow more traumatic for her. She cried so hard that she curled up into a fetal position in the middle of his office.
Pearl was frightened by the sight of her cousin breaking down in front of her. Maya was always strong in her eyes and seeing her cry like this was definitely not like her. Just as Pearl was going to comfort her, Edgeworth came into the office. "Ah, Ms. Fey?" he said awkwardly. The sight of Maya crying in a ball on the floor made him most uncomfortable.
Maya looked up to the doorway of the office. The light from the main entrance blinding her slightly. "E-Edgeworth!" she exclaimed. "I-oh...um. Sorry you had to see that. I-I don't know what came over me." Maya got up and brushed her acolyte robe awkwardly.
Edgeworth smiled slightly. "Apologies are not necessary, Ms. Fey. I completely understand." His smile faded as he sat down on one of the unoccupied chairs. "Perhaps you are in a good position to tell me what happened tonight?"
Maya nodded. She turned to Trucy and Pearl. "You two, off to bed. You have school in the morning." Trucy frowned, "I can't go to school tomorrow. What about Daddy?" Trucy was trying her best to hold back tears. Pearl frowned, "Yeah! We want to help!" Pearl said firmly. Maya came over to the two of them and embraced them both. "Don't worry. We will find him. I promise." Maya let them both go and had a gentle hand on their shoulders. "I know how great you two are with investigating, but this is a very dangerous situation, and I can't bear the fact that you two might get hurt so please, stay out of the way."
After a ton of negotiating and begging on their part, Trucy and Pearl finally nodded in defeat. "Come on, Pearl," said Trucy taking her hand, "Let's go watch Despicable Me or something." Pearl nodded. Pearl turned to Maya, "Goodnight Mystic Maya, Mr. Edgeworth." And the two ran upstairs.
