The anticipation was killing her. Maya looked out the train window as the trees sped past by her quickly. Her heart started to race as the train started to slow down, quickly inching closer and closer to the last stop.
Maya felt her stomach flutter as the conductor called out the final stop of the line. Maya felt like she was going to pass out, she was breathing so fast. Needless to say, she was nervous. Her mind was a blur as she instinctively stepped out of the train and walked across the train station.
Her mind was racing with thoughts of him. Other than letters, phone calls, and texts, she hadn't seen Phoenix in 7 years. Following in her mother's footsteps and becoming the next Master really took up her time. The Elders were insistent that she had no distractions while she trained and mastered her channeling skills. That means no Steel Samurai, no cases, and no Nick.
Nick. Her brain went on autopilot as she walked down the familiar road to her sister's, and now Phoenix's, law office. She suddenly felt a pang of guilt in her heart as she cursed herself for not visiting him sooner and complied to the Elders' wishes of self-isolation. She knew that Phoenix understood that she couldn't come visit him and vice versa. Thankfully, however, she had found an afternoon to sneak away as the entire village had gone on a spiritual retreat to the mountains.
She started to fantasize what he looked like at age 33. She blushed as an image of a shirtless Phoenix with bulky muscles and a more mature bone structure. Maybe he grew a sexy beard? She sighed as she remembered the twinkle in his eye as he figured things out in court, and how his smile would brighten a room. She felt a fire inside of her as she imagined her waking up next to him in his bed. Maybe tonight...she could stay...with him.
Maya turned the street corner to the street that she knew by heart. She turned into the door and—
Maya gasped audibly. The Wright and Co Law Office was gone and was replaced with a dentist's office. Maya felt her stomach drop to her feet. What happened? Where was he? Negative thoughts started to overwhelm her as she jumped to the worst possible conclusion.
She shakily took out her phone and pressed the one number she cherished on speed dial. Come on, come on! Pick up. Please, Nick. You can't be—"Hello? Maya?" She heard Phoenix say. Maya breathed out a huge sigh of relief.
"Oh thank the gods." She said, her voice cracking from leftover negative thoughts. "Maya? Are you okay?" Phoenix asked. She could hear the sudden urgency in his voice. "I'm fine. Sorry. I tried to call you, but your phone went to voicemail earlier." She lied. It would ruin the surprise if she told him that she was coming over.
"Oh sorry! I was...busy." He said. Maya raised an eyebrow. "Doing...what?" She asked. "Wright, your raise." She heard some man say in the background. "Uh, I gotta go Maya. I'll...talk to you tonight?" Maya smirked. Oh you will. "Sounds good, Nick." She said.
She thought for a moment as she hung up the phone. The only clue that she had to his location was what that man said in the background. Wright, your raise...what did that mean? She thought as she walked the streets of Los Angeles.
Lady Luck, however, was with her that evening as she reached downtown. As she passed some more buildings deep in thought, the smell of amazing food drew her back into reality. She suddenly realized that she was starving. Her mouth started to salivate as the scent led her to this new restaurant she never heard of before. The Borscht Bowl Club was written in red. It was in Cyrillic lettering but was still readable to the English speaker.
But what caught Maya's eye was the poster on the left of the door: Wednesday Night is Poker Night! Featuring the Musical Stylings of pianist Phoenix Wright. See management for details on how you can sign up.
