The air was extra cold that February morning as Pearl, Maya, Trucy, and Phoenix surrounded themselves around Mia's grave. They normally didn't trek all the way down to Khura'in village, the two hour train ride was just too much sometimes. Today, however, was worth it. It was Mia's birthday.
"Hey sis. I miss you a lot." Maya started. She laid the poesies she bought down on her headstone. "Happy Birthday. I love you." Phoenix looked down and saw that Maya's eyes were quickly filling up with tears.
Phoenix reached down and grabbed a hold of her hand and intertwined his fingers with hers. She looked up at him. "Sorry, I just...I wish she was here." He squeezed her hand. "Don't be sorry, I wish she was here too." He bent down and kissed her forehead.
Maya looked down. "I get so frustrated sometimes because I want to see her so bad, but I know I have to let her soul rest." Stray tears fell from her porcelain colored face. "I don't want to disturb her, Nick, but I just miss her so much."
Phoenix wrapped the now crying Maya into his strong arms. She grabbed his coat and cried into his chest, as he made circles on her back with his fingers.
Pearl and Trucy watched as their two soon-to-be mother and father comforted each other. Pearl sighed. "I hate seeing Mystic Maya like this. Mystic Mia was such a good sister to her." Trucy nodded. "Yeah. Daddy always says that Miss Mia and Mommy were close, and that Miss Mia was the best boss he could ever hope for."
Pearl suddenly got an idea. She pulled on Trucy's coat. "Distract Mr. Nick and Mystic Maya. I just got a great idea!" she whispered in her ear. "What is it?" but Pearl already was running up the hill, her feet fighting against the slippery snow.
"Pearls, where are you going?" Phoenix asked, his dad mode dialed up to an 11. He was still hugging Maya but was looking in Pearl's direction. Pearl turned around quickly as soon as she heard her name being called. "Uhhh, I'm going to go to the village for a moment. I'll be right back!" she called back.
"Hurry please. We need to get going soon."
"Don't worry, Mr. Nick!" and she ran off toward the village square.
Trucy took that as her cue. "Hey Daddy? Mommy? Can you tell me more about Miss Mia?" Maya smiled and broke free from Phoenix's grasp. "Of course." She guided the two to a nearby wooden bench.
"My sister Mia was one of the best sisters in the world. She was tough, smart, beautiful and funny. She and I were really close, like you and Pearly. She and I would hang out all the time when I came to visit her in Los Angeles. She would tell me about this silly and dorky 24 year old who came to work with her and how he would make her laugh." She looked at Phoenix and smirked. Phoenix smiled sheepishly. "Your father made her day multiple times. I just couldn't wait to meet him." Phoenix grabbed her hand again.
"She seemed really awesome." Trucy mused. "She was." Maya said. Her face fell. "When she died, I thought I would be alone forever. I had no one to turn to." She looked up at Phoenix. "But I wasn't." She touched his jaw with her hand. "She had left me with an angel..." she said dreamily. Phoenix blushed. "Gee, Maya..." he said all flustered. Maya gave him a peck on his lips.
"Well well well." A familiar voice rang out. "Never in my days, Phoenix Wright, that I thought that you would end up with my baby sister."
Phoenix and Maya froze, staring at each other and their brains trying to register what they had just heard. Trucy looked upward behind them in a look of awe. Maya's eyes started to fill with tears again as she and Phoenix slowly turned around.
There, in Pearl's place, with her body now somewhat fitting into Pearl's robes, was the birthday girl. She looked the same, with her brown sparkling eyes and her cheerful smile. Although she was supposed to be 38 today, she would forever be 27.
