Maya pulled her hood over her head as she walked down the broken cobblestone road that lead through skid row. Tattered men stared at her and yelled out crude, sexual remarks as she made her way down the narrow street. Almost there. Just a few more blocks. She thought to herself. She gripped her basket tighter and walked faster.
She finally reached her little cottage at the end of the dirt road. She was thankful that she had her home in a rural part outside of the capital, even though it was much too small for her liking...or for anyone's liking for that matter. She walked in and saw her 11 year old cousin Pearl smile up at her. "Maya! Welcome home!" she exclaimed.
Maya took off her hood and set her wicker basket down on the rickety, uneven table. The bugs that were hiding on the table dispersed as Maya slammed down her basket. "Pearly, what are you doing sitting in the dark?" She asked. Pearly continued to play with her doll. The light from the last lantern that was lit over her head was fading fast. "You told me that I couldn't touch the oil or the matchsticks. So I just sat here under the last burning lantern."
Maya smiled sympathetically at Pearl. "Sorry Pearly. I forgot. Good job." She praised. She took off her coat and went into the chest and took out the oil and the matches. She refilled each of the lamps with oil and lit the wick on fire, until the entire one room cottage radiated a soft orange glow.
She put away the stale bread and the moldy cheese in the cabinet that she had bought from a shambled stand out on Anhad Street. It wasn't the best food in the world, but she and Pearl could make it last for a few days.
"Okay, Pearly. It's time for bed." Maya said. Pearly hopped up onto the one twin bed that they shared. "Will you tell me that story about the Pink Princess again?" Pearly inquired. Her legs were swinging back and forth. Maya smiled. "Sure Pearly. Let me just go change first."
Maya went to the only other room in their cottage, the bathroom, to change into her nightgown. She took her hair down and brushed her teeth. She came out to find Pearl cuddling with the husk doll Mia had made for her.
"Are you sure you want to hear this story again? I've already told you this story five times this week!" Pearl nodded vigorously. "Yes yes yes! It's such a romantic story." She hid her face in her hands and sighed dreamily.
Maya sighed. She really didn't want to tell the story again, but ever since her mother and sister died, Pearl always insisted that Maya told her a happy story. She one day told Pearl the story that Mia used to tell her about a girl who met and married and a handsome Samurai and became his princess. Maya remembered feeling an overabundance of joy when Mia had told her the story, and she knew that Pearl did as well. "Alright, but no more this week! Okay? Once upon a time, there was a beautiful peasant girl..."

Prince Phoenix stared out of the window, looking down at the city lights below. It was only two more weeks now until his 30th birthday. According to the laws of the Kingdom of Khura'in, in order to become king, Phoenix must find someone to marry before the age of 30, otherwise the throne will be passed onto the king's 2nd oldest. Since Phoenix was an only child, he had to find someone and someone fast.
He rang a bell to call his advisor, Miles Edgeworth, to the throne room. Edgeworth entered almost immediately. "Yes, sire?" he said bowing. Phoenix rolled his eyes. "Edgeworth, I told you that calling me 'sire' and bowing aren't necessary."
Edgeworth blushed. "Sorry si-er I mean Wright. What can I do for you?" "Are you familiar with the 30th birthday rule?" Edgeworth nodded, "I am. Your 30th is in two weeks, is it not?" Phoenix sighed, "Yeah, it is. My mother said that I need to find someone and fast, but I don't want to." He turned to look out the window once more. "The only woman I ever loved almost killed me so that she could take the throne, so I guess I'm...still not over that. What do you think I should do?"
