"Just go with him baby; he ain't gonna hurt you."
Standing here with my mother and her drug dealer with tears running down my face, I really just wanted her to leave with me. I knew my mom had a bad drug habit, but this was the first time she tried to use me to get them. I didn't know to say or do because I was so scared. I only went there to go get her; I didn't want her to keep doing this to herself. I was tired of lying in the bed crying every time she left me home. I wanted her to stop doing drugs and come home and take care of me. I was only 11 years old I wasn't supposed to be taking care of her.
"Come on baby girl, I just want to play a little game with you. I promise I won't hurt you."
I looked back and forth from my mother to him; I couldn't move at all. I looked back over at him and he reached his hand out for me. I looked over at my mom and she was nodding her head for me to take his hand. When I finally put my hand into his, he pulled me over to him and kissed me on the mouth. I pulled away from him, looked at my mom and pleaded with her not to make me do this. The guy threw my mom a bag, scooped me up and carried me into a room kicking and screaming.
"Jas?! Jas?!"
"Yes?"
"Girl, are you ok?"
"Yes, I'm fine. Let's go to lunch."
"Ok, I have something to tell you."
"Alright, let me get my purse and talk to my assistant really quick and I will meet you downstairs."
She left and I grabbed my phone and purse and left out of my office. I looked over at my assistants' desk but she wasn't there so I left a note. I got on the elevator and started thinking about my mom again. Before I got too deep into my thoughts the doors opened to the elevator and I got off. On my way to the door I looked over and saw a girl I used to have sex with back in college. She was a sweet girl but I was only in it for the sex and she was trying to be in it for the long run. Once I found that out I ended it as fast as it started.
I kept walking through the crowd hoping that she wouldn't see me so we could avoid that awkward conversation, but it was just my luck because she yelled my name out. I tried to keep walking, pretending that I didn't hear her, but she ran up behind me and grabbed my arm.
"Hey Jasmine, how have you been?"
"I've been good. What about yourself?"
"That's good, but I have been good as well."
We stood there staring at each other awkwardly. I knew it was going to be like this; this is the exact reason I tried to avoid her. I did not want to have this little awkward conversation and I did not want to have to explain to her why I just up and disappeared on her. I didn't feel like explaining to yet another person why I did not want to be in a relationship, and I damn sure did not want to argue with her about all the other females I have sex with from time to time like I do with Jada. I had a lot to focus on while I was in college and having a girlfriend was something I did not need to be added to my plate.
"I e-mailed you last week. I guess you have been busy, but I just wanted to let you know that I moved into the city and I got a job in your law firm."
"Congratulations Sam. But I have been really busy and really haven't had a lot of time to make any social calls."
"I understand how that is. Maybe we can catch up one day when you aren't busy?"
"I would like that, but right now I'm headed out to lunch and I have someone waiting on me. Check in with my secretary and see what I have available and we can do lunch."
