"Dad?"
He looked over at me, confused. "Percy? It hasn't even been a week. Or has it?"
"I know," I mumbled. "I just wanted to talk to you. I mean if you're not busy. I don't want to-"
"Percy." Dad stopped me and I looked at my lap and dug my fingers into the sand.
"Sorry."
"There's nothing to be sorry about. I was just going to tell you that I'm in the middle of a meeting. It'll be a little bit until it's over, but you can come here and wait so we can talk in person."
"I don't want to rush you or anything. I'll just go talk to Mom. I wanted cookies anyway. Bye, have fun." I dismissed the IM and got up. I headed back into the Cave, walking right to the Zeta Tubes.
"Where are you going?" Artemis asked.
"To go see my mom. You two can come with me if you want."
Megan and Artemis looked at each other before nodding. I searched through the database and selected the closest Zeta to the apartment. We walked down the busy streets in relative silence.
"Where are a bunch of hot babes like you headed?" A guy got up from where he was sitting and started walking alongside us. "It's not safe for you to be walking on the streets by yourself."
"We're fine."
"Let me walk you to wherever you're going. For my sake. I wouldn't be able to deal with-"
I turned to face him. "Listen buddy. I've walked these streets and seen things you could never imagine. I can handle myself just fine and I don't need some guy to 'protect' me."
The moment I spoke up against him, his attitude changed faster than my dad's.
He was cussing and yelling at us, his hands clenching into fists. He swung a punch at me. Before I could dodge or counter or do anything, someone else caught it.
"It's not nice to try to hit ladies."
I sighed with a mix of relief and dread.
Apollo tightened his grip on the guys hand and I could hear his knuckles crack. "I suggest you get lost and don't bother anyone again. If you keep bothering ladies, my sister might find out and she'll be nowhere as nice as me."
The guy stumbled away, before sprinting out of sight. Apollo took a deep breath before releasing it. "You guys okay?"
"Uh, who are you?" Artemis asked.
"Doesn't matter. Uh, tell your dad that I did this for you, Percy."
"Did you make him mad? Because I'm not getting in the middle of that."
"Like he'd hurt you. Oh me, look at the time. I'm going to miss my concert." He hurried away, towards the Empire State Building.
I really hope this was just him deciding to walk and not him going out of his way, because if he's going out of his way that mean they're not leaving me alone. I'd have to keep communication with Dad and demigods at a minimum.
"That was weird. How do you know him, Percy?"
"My eccentric cousin. He has a weird obsession with haikus and just be happy we didn't have to hear one. Though I wonder what he did to make my dad mad. He's temperamental but he's gotten a better handle on his temper. Oh, here we are."
I led them to my mom's door and knocked. There was yelling from inside but soon enough the door opened.
"Percy!" Mom smiled and pulled me into a hug. "I just made cookies."
"Yes!" I tried to run inside, but Mom put out an arm to stop me.
"Who are your friends?"
I sighed. "Mom, this is Megan and Artemis. Megan likes baking and Artemis is not the one you're thinking of. Now can I eat cookies?"
Mom dropped her arm and let me rush inside and to the kitchen, where cookies were cooling on the counter.
"She's eating faster than Wally."
"I didn't think that was possible."
I swallowed and looked at them. "Do you want some? I'm gonna go jump on Paul."
"No you aren't!"
I grinned. "Want to bet, Paul?!" I ran and jumped. "Hi."
Paul sighed. "You take after your uncle."
"Excuse you, I am nowhere near that level of drama."
"This would be different if you hadn't been home already."
I shrugged. "I just wanted to jump on you."
He rolled his eyes and hugged me. "I'm happy you're okay. I'm not even your dad and I stress over that."
"Is this you when you were little?" Megan asked, looking at one of the numerous pictures hanging up. I got up and walked over. I smiled and nodded.
"So, what made you show up? Homesick already?" Paul asked.
"No. I called Dad and he was busy so I wanted to talk to Mom."
"Ouch. I'm your second choice? I'm hurt."
I looked at her. "And you say I get that from my dad."
"Well I know if you wanted to talk to him first, then it was probably something to do with him. Are you two hungry?"
I watched with a small smile as Mom began adopting Artemis and Megan. We spent a while hanging out and eating cookies before we decided to head back to the Cave.
"She's nice." Megan said as we walked away.
I nodded. "The best. Also you're going to want to hide those cookies from Wally."
"You don't have to tell us that." Artemis laughed, but slowly trailed off. "Why aren't you home? Why are you staying with us?"
I sighed. "I honestly have no idea. I was told to observe you guys and report back. And it's not even tactical information. I'm not spying on you so you can get attacked...I'm not sure why, but I'm pretty sure it's not that."
"That sounds suspicious."
I shrugged. "If anyone attacks you, I'll be fighting beside you. I may not be trained to fight beside you guys, but I'm capable of holding my own."
