I wake up to a loud screeching in my ears and groan but don't hear it. I open my eyes but all I see is blinding light. This has never happened to me before. I roll out of bed and onto the floor with my eyes closed. I need to find a fire element that can bend light, even if it's just the little bit. I open up my senses and can feel they're all in pain, but two. That's weird... Everyone should be in pain if they just woke up. I feel around to see if I know these people and I'm surprised to feel the warmth of a child and someone closer to the child, both people I know. Who..? I stop and think. The boys. I feel my anger boil and then accidentally send a heat wave their way. The noise and light diminish in seconds and I lean against the wall, glad it is over. That's one way to wake up.
After everyone was feeling better, I ran into the boys room to see them both in just their underwear, panting for air as they open the windows and turn on fans. The both quickly turn to me and cower away from me. I feel my anger go down a little, but only because Aidan is adorable and doesn't deserve my anger, he's just a kid. I look right at River and he looks at his feet. "Aidan, why don't you go downstairs and have something to eat with the others? I'll be down shortly. I need to talk to River," I tell him while getting down to face level with him. He smiles and me and nods while running out of the room. I hear Aidan's little feet run down the stairs and glare at River.
"Are you the 5th or is he?" I ask him. He looks shocked that I picked up that they had different powers. Siblings usually will, but this felt different. Aidan was... strong, too strong for his age.
"He is," I hear him whisper. I nod and think. If Aidan is the Fifth then that means that the fire who can cause that much light is him. I read River's powers again and see he is definitely not as strong as Aidan. I'm barely stronger than him and he's a little boy!
"I want the WHOLE story. All of it. I know he isn't just brother and I know for a fact that you are not as young as you are saying you are, although you seem to have everyone else fooled," he looks at me with understanding and fear.
"Let's sit and talk about this," when he talks it sounds deeper and smoother now. I knew his voice was forced to sound the way it was. We both sit and I turn to him at the same time he turns to me. "Aidan is my kid. I was only 14 when he was born and his mother was 17. Please don't ask how it happened, I was a kid that had problems and was hiding from the Elders or whatever you guys called them where you are from. Aidan's mom was named Eilene. She was beautiful and I loved her, even at the young age of 14. I knew I had something special with this water bender a few houses from mine. We eventually started dating and before we know it, Aidan is coming into the world. Everything was going amazing...," I see his eyes glass over. "Eilene died after getting to hold Aidan and I broke. Aidan is all I have left, and I tried to hide him from THEM, but they found us before he was 2. I told him as he got older that I'm just his brother. I miss Eilene a lot, but he looks so much like her. He is so strong and smart. I couldn't loose him. He's all I have now," I look at him and I can tell he is telling the truth.
"How old is Aidan?" he looks at me and smiles.
"He will be 6 in a few months. I'm just turned 20 a few days ago, but I tell everyone I'm 14, going on 15. The longer I can stay with him if we get caught, the better," he frowns and looks at me.
"I won't tell anyone, River. Aidan is a special boy, and I can tell he is strong. You'll eventually find someone you will want to have other kids with and to help you raise Aidan. You have to know that they will have to let aware that he is your kid, not your brother," he nods and looks at me strange.
"What if I've already found that girl, but she is uninterested in finding someone to be her partner?" I feel him get closer, but dismiss it.
"Then I suggest you tell her of your feelings," I say seriously. He grins and gets even closer to me.
"Hey, I like you. A lot," he looks in my eyes and I feel a weird feeling in my stomach as his lips stop not even an inch from mine and feel my throat go dry. I look between his lips and eyes as he does the same to me. My breathing hitches as he slowly comes closer to me and I feel my eyes slowly start to close.
