When I walk down to her in the morning she looks up at me in pain. "Please just end me. I'm sorry. I can't take the pain anymore. It hurts so much," she has tears free falling down her face and I look at her with my head turned.
"Can't be too painful if you can still cry. Sleep well last night?" I crouch down to be at her eye level and notice her flinch at my movements. I smirks at the thought that she had my brother like this not even 36 hours ago. Oh, how the tables have turned on her. She whimpers as I run my hand down the side of her face. "I bet my brother begged you to stop hitting him so many times and you didn't. I guess Karma really doesn't like you," I cackle as she cries harder and I turn to leave her. "I'll be back tonight to continue this fun time we're having," I look back at her and wink before leaving her down there.

When I walk into the kitchen to wash my hands and eat breakfast, I hear whispers. I sure do hope this isn't about me. I do not appreciate talk about me behind my back. I go towards the voices and recognize them, but cannot place them. I can hear them while still out of sight and I conceal before they can sense me. "You will not demand to be wed to my daughter. That is final. I do not care how old she is. She hasn't been here as long as everyone else and she has no desire to be wed to someone. Especially you," I hear the hiss at the end of the sentence and recognize the voice to be my father's.
"Too bad that's not how the elders see it. I will marry your daughter, and we will have the strongest heirs to have ever been seen and will be seen for many a years. If you won't give her to me, I will take her," I try to figure out where I've heard this voice as i process the information. I have to be married, and whoever this is has asked my father before coming to me, or maybe this person already asked my father.... Mathew!
Just as I figure it out who is talking with my father, he comes around the corner and I almost get caught. I hide behind the wall around the corner and wait for him to leave. I listen as a set of footsteps leave and then come around the corner, thank goodness I wasn't.... Omph! Oh no.... I look up and my breath catches in my throat. He bands down and gets close to my face.
"You should know that listening in on other people's conversations that did not include your presence is rude," he whispers in my ear and I gulp. I nod and look down. Why do I feel like a small child around him? "I will marry you, Katty. You'll be mine soon enough," he winks and walks away. I feel myself get mad. Who does he think he is? He is NOT going to marry me. He's no boss of mine. I walk away in anger and walk into River. He smiles until he sees me and he falters a little.
"You alright, Kate?" he looks me over and stops right in front of me, trying to read my mood.
"Just peachy," I grit back in sarcasm. I see him frown and pull in his eyebrows, making a weird crinkle thing.
"What's the matter? You know you can talk to me about anything," he rubs my arms with his hands and I can feel myself calming down slowly. I look up at him and take in a deep breath.
"Mathew visited my father and told him I am going to marry him without anyone, including my own, permission. Crap about me carrying the best heirs blah blah blah," I frown and look at my feet in thought. River pulls me close to him and I breath him in. I could stay like this forever. Then a thought hits me. I could stay like this... forever. I look up at River with confliction in my eyes and he looks worried.
"What?" he tries to read my thoughts and I give him a strained smile.
"I think I know how to get around Mathew, but it would include telling someone how I feel about them, and having my parent's permission if the person agrees," I bite down on my bottom lip and look all over the room, anywhere but River's calculating eyes.
"Why do I have a feeling this has something to do with someone you're close to and you think they'll just tell you 'no' before you even ask them?" I can feel his hot gaze on me as I look at my feet and nod. "Who is it? Maybe I can help?" he asks as I look up at him and go pale.
"River, would you consider marrying me?" I whisper and watch him confusion turn to something I've never seen before. Maybe this was a bad idea after all...
