4| Are you alright?

THE HAWKS were up by five. Nova hadn't played yet but coach bombay just told them to line change. everyone on the team rolled over the boards to get on the ice as Nova rolled her eyes and jumped over. she quickly skated over as she stood on the left, in front of Banks. Connie did the face off with Charlie in her other side. Nova focused her attention on the face off- but Banks, Banks stared at the girl in front of him with half shock, half curiosity.

The ref dropped the puck and Larson knocked Connie's stick out of her hand. the puck went over to Charlie's side and both McGill and Larson body checked him into the boards.

Larson quickly got the puck as Charlie fell and skated along. all the defence fell so Nova skated quickly over to him and took the puck away. just as she turned, McGill checked her down, causing Larson to get the puck again and score.

Nova groaned as she stood up and adjusted her helmet. "Come on man," she whispered to herself as she skated off, "that was real cheap."

Bombay groaned as they started up again. right as Larson got the puck, Nova skated over and knocked him down. Connie was in front of her and stood in shock before taking Nova's position.

"alright. now we're talking..." Nova whispered to herself. she skated along, beating the hawks that she passed. Banks skated to her side and they fought for the puck. that's when Nova remembered what she did in soccer. Nova held off until they were closer to the net before stopping instantly and putting her body between the boy and the puck. he was going a bit too fast but stopped right in front of the goalie. she swerved around and found the open spot on the other side of the net. she quickly slid the puck in, BUZZ!

"yeah!" Nova cheered, "alright. 6-1 were getting there!"

the buzzer went off as she scored and skated around the net to get back to her side. the team cheered and she raised up her stick in celebration.

Bombay glanced over at the hawks coach and smirked. Reilly looked dumbfounded.

he shook his head before changing up the lines, taking Banks, McGill and Larson off.

he shut the door and turned to them with angry looks.

"what was that?" he asked sternly, "come on Banks! you gonna let her get past you like that!"

Banks shook his head.

He looked to McGill. "i want her out."

The three boys nodded fast and looked at each other.

"who is this girl?" he said as he looked back onto the rink before looking back at the boys, "do any of you know her?"

McGill stayed silent and so did Larson. Banks looked away and stared at his skates.

"hm?" Coach Reilly said as he stared back down at the boys, specifically Banks.

he still didn't say a thing.

"Collins. November Collins." Larson spoke out, "she's in my math class"

Reilly furrowed his eyebrows. "she goes to your school? how can she afford that? she's playing for district five"

Larson shrugged. "i don't know," he said, "maybe not everyone on that part of Minnesota is- well... you know, poor.."

"i dont know, son," Coach Reilly said while shaking his head, "maybe it's something else... do any of you know where she lives?"

McGill and Larson shook their heads and Banks stayed silent.

Coach Reilly sighed, "alright, whatever." he said, "you three get out on the ice. come on. let's go."

Banks got back onto the ice and he instantly got the puck. Nova watched from the other end of the rink as all the defenders fell over again. she began to skate quickly over and around the net as banks swerved from the other side. they were both behind the net as she quickly grabbed the puck- Banks not knowing that she was there in the first place. she skated passed him and barely made it half way before McGill bodychecked her into the boards. Larson quickly got the puck and passed to Banks. right as Nova stood up, she saw Banks go around the net again and swerve the puck into the back post before cheering. she sighed as the second period came to a stop.

Nova was a bit hurt from the last check McGill gave her so she slowly skated over to the box. Bombay looked at her.

"you ok?" he asked sternly. she was exhausted but she wanted to play. she needed to play. she wasn't sure how long she would be able to watch her team play like that.

she nodded tiredly. she could barely talk from all her exhaustion. She looked over to the Hawks bench and spotted McGill and Larson being sternly talked to by the coach. Banks stood back with his head hanging low. He glanced over to the District 5 bench and saw Nova looking over. he gave a weak smile and Nova looked away.

"just- just get the hell out of here" she heard the coach say to the team. she began to walk into the box for her shift but coach stopped her.

"you're staying out there Collins"

Nova sighed and skated back out, waiting for Guy to start face off. she was ready for him to be checked and not get the puck.

as the referee got the puck down, Larson quickly passed it towards Banks. Nova was quick though. she snuck her stick in between and skated off towards the net. she was tired. she wasn't even skating that fast but she managed to pass every hawk. it was just her and the goalie before she lifted her stick back and shot the puck. the moment she did, she felt a strong force on her push her down. her back hit the ground then her head. the momentum was strong enough to make her slide to the board.

she shut her eyes in pain.

"alright McGill!" She heard the hawks coach laugh

she groaned as she tried to get up before laying back down again.

"are you alright?" she heard a voice say as they skated over to her. she opened her eyes to see beautiful blue eyes staring down at her. Banks. he offered her a hand but she slid up with the help of the wall. she got up roughly and Banks backed up a bit.

"i'm fine" Nova grunted quietly before skating away. she skated towards Guy.

"did it go in?" She asked him

Guy laughed, "that's what your concerned about?"

Nova looked at him. Guy's smile faded as he saw she was serious.

"yeah... uh.. it went in" He stuttered.

"good," she said as she turned and began to skate backwards while the play started up again, "that fall better have been worth it."
