NOVEMBER sighed as she walked out of her household. she had practice tonight and after the game the other day, she felt like she just couldn't do it. she wasn't the type to give up on things but now, it was a different story. she walked along the sidewalk as she looked down at her feet. she gripped her backpack straps and smiled. she could envision the hockey skates on her feet as she walked, it still felt like she was gliding. she only ever felt this way once. back when she first began soccer when she was eight years old. after her first practice, she was walking home and she stared down at her feet. she could envision her cleats on her feet even though she was only wearing slides. ever since then, she would stare at her feet after playing. she's never felt it for any other sport but soccer. now it's hockey.

she heard a loud ruckus behind her and a series of laughter. she turned around and groaned as she spotted McGill and Larson on rollerblades. they smiled at her and she turned around and rolled her eyes. since they were on blades, they caught up to her pretty quickly.

"think you're on the wrong side of Minnesota, Collins" Larson laughed out as he skated circles around her.

McGill laughed, "yeah. where are your poor teammates?"

Nova ignored them as she kept walking.

"Come on, Collins," Larson teased, "we all know you don't belong on that stupid district 5 team"

Nova rolled her eyes and stopped before turning and looking at both boys.

"and what team do i belong with?" She said bitterly

"us. the hawks" McGill smiled proudly.

Nova scoffed. "a team with two good players and a cheep shot enforcer? as if."

"what's that supposed to mean?" Larson said

"i mean that you hawks don't need me. i don't want to be on your team anyway. i belong with district 5. you hawks can go off and do your own dandy thing together and leave me out of it"

McGill laughed as Larson scoffed. "if you belong with district 5, why you going to our school over here in Edina? you must be living in district 6 property."

"and how would you know where i live? stalkers"

McGill began to get furious and was about to get real angry at Nova before the two boys heard a whistle from behind them. they turned and Nova looked in between the two boys to see a familiar face. It was Banks but Nova didn't see that. instead, she saw the boy from the lake. She saw the boy that she saw the day she was about to leave for her final soccer game. she saw him and the beautiful blue eyes were what gave it out.

"hey Banksy!" Larson called out. Banks came to a halt between the boys and he looked at Nova. she saw a faint smile on his face but mostly he had a plain expression.

"What's going on here?" he asked the two. McGill was about to talk before Larson gave him a look.

"nothing," Larson said quickly, "we were just on our way to school. Right, McGill?"

McGill nodded cautiously before scowling at Nova. she narrowed her eyes at him in return before the two boys began to skate off. she followed them with her eyes before turning back to Banks with a cautious look in her eyes. she eyes him up and down before looking back into the beautiful blues.

"thanks." she said softly. she began to turn and walk away but she heard footsteps running towards her. she looked to her side and saw Banks there with a soft smile, walking beside her.

he held his hand out, "i-i know we've been going to the same school for a while but i've never been able to introduce myself properly. I'm Adam. Adam Banks but you probably only know me as Banks..."

She looked at him with a slightly bewildered expression before taking his hand and shaking it, "I'm November Collins. most people call me Nova"

"i know," Adam said, "I mean- i know you're name. you're on the district 5 hockey team... and you're my neighbour"

"right. i forgot."

Nova began to walk silently with Adam beside her. She knew he was the enemy. she knew he was the hawk that everyone on her team hated, but she also knew another thing. she knew that wasn't him. she knew that Banks was not the same as Adam. she could see it in his eyes. When he was around McGill and Larson, his eyes didn't shine. she would see him talking to them or talking with his team happily but his eyes didn't shine the way they did when she saw him at the lake or near her driveway- or now. his eyes weren't beautiful when he was Banks.

"so..." Adam began to say, "um... why are you playing for district 5?"

"what do you mean?" Nova asked

"well.. you're my neighbour and our neighbourhood belongs to District 6... so you should be a Hawk.."

"i should?"

"yeah... that's why McGill and Larson were talking to you. At the game, Coach was asking where you lived because- well, he kinda thinks you're a hot shot for District 5- NOT that you're not good or anything- i mean, you're great at hockey! you're amazing actually... but Larson blurted how you went to our school and he began to ask where you lived.."

"oh?"

"yeah... i didn't say anything- don't worry. I thought you might like being on District 5... I mean, all your friends are there and everything..."

Nova smiled half heartedly as she looked at him, "yeah," she said, "thanks for that"

"no problem. i'm just worried about McGill and Larson. They have it out for you. They'll be watching you like a Hawk."

"what a coincidence" Nova muttered. She still kept a distance from Adam as they walked. she felt awkward talking to him since he's a hawk, but she also knew he wasn't the mean person she saw on the ice. she just wasn't sure if she could trust being friends with him.

"yeah... um- look.. i know your team hates me and everything-"

"right," Nova cut him off as they approached the school. she looked at him, "we're at school and i better get going..."

"oh yeah," he said, "I'll see you around- i guess"

Adam never finished his sentence as the girl began to walk away after he said 'ill see...'

He sighed as he stared at the back of her head. she walked off and turned the corner. he bit the inside of his cheek and he began to walk the other direction with his head hanging low. He stared down at his feet and smiled. He could see his skates on his feet. He felt like he was gliding.
