"Annabel, breathe, it's okay, I'm coming. I'm in my car on a main road, not far from the forest. if you keep walking north, for about 5 minutes, you should reach it, and i'll be there waiting, okay?"

"o-okay," she trembled down the line, and hung up.

I sat in my car, tapping my fingers anxiously on the steering wheel. the darkness enveloped everything, the moonlight the only thing outlining the trees. the light from inside my car was pretty dim, but Annabel should have been able to see it from quite a bit away. the inside of my arm cast itched uncontrollably.

I felt on edge, nervous, worried even. she'd put her trust into my hands.

5 minutes passed and there was no sign of her. grabbing my coat, I hopped out the car and walked to the edge of the clearing.

"Annabel?" I dated to call out. "Annabel?" nothing.

my eyes scanned my surroundings hastily, hoping for a sign. just then, a twig snapped in front of me. then another, than a load more.

"Annabel?"

"A-Alex," came a wavering, cracking voice. I switched on the torch on my phone and illuminated the trees in front of me, catching in the light a figure, who lifted up their hands, blinded by the brightness.

"Alex?" called the familiar female voice again.

instantly I rushed forward and pulled her into a hug, attempting to also warm her up. she stayed silent, and only stifled a sob. slipping her numb body into my coat, I led her to the car and climbed into the back seat with her.

she was shivering almost violently, her face streaked with mascara tear stains and smudged lip gloss around her upper lip.

"Annie? it's okay, let me turn the air con off, get it nice and warm in here. I think I have a blanket somewhere."

after rummaging for the latter mentioned blanket, I found it and draped it over her.

"I'm s-sorry," she managed.

"no, no, don't be. hey, guess we're even now." I grinned, and she smiled briefly, attempting a laugh.

"yeah, I guess."

"do you need anything?" I asked.

"um, n-no. oh, wait, um, maybe you could possibly, like," she stumbled over her words, her teeth chattering.

"could you lie with me?"

"yes, of course, yes. to raise your body temp, right?"

"yeah, yeah." she nodded.

I pushed back the back seats into the boot, creating a bed like space, and lay her down next to me, mimicking my body around hers. before I knew it she was asleep, or had passed out from cold and exhaustion.

"night, Annie." I whispered, brushing a hand along her forehead. she looked so serene and peaceful. Annabel wasn't perfect - her nose was slightly too big, and she had a few spots on her t-zone that were visible because her concealer had washed off. but she was beautiful. and funny. and gentle. but strong and independent. I fell asleep staring at her.
