9. Currents

The whole hospital was busy and Nurses was running around while Melissa was helping a patient on a gurney.

"Okay, keep pressure on it. The doctor is on her way" Melissa said to the woman, "Does anyone know where Dr. Hilyard is?" she yelled. 

Melissa then turned around and saw, Scott, Harper and James walking in. Scott had a bag of food in his hand 

"Oh, thank God" she said before she walked towards them. "I'm starving" she said and took the bag from Scott "Oh. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Thank you three for bringing me dinner" she said and hugged them. 

"Is everything okay?" Scott asked "Except for half the accident victims in a 10-car pile-up being rerouted here from downtown, and the ER attending not answering any of his pages? Yeah, I'm okay" Melissa said  "What does 'not answering pages' mean?" Scott asked "It means that nobody can find him. So now we have to wait for the on-call to get here" Melissa said. 

Then a woman walked up to Melissa "Miss?" she asked "Yes?" Melissa said and looked at the woman "Excuse me. Can I kind of please have something for the pain?" the woman asked "Okay, I'm sorry. I know. But actually giving you something could complicate things, so...We really just need to wait for the doctors, okay?" Melissa said and help the woman into a chair. 

"How much longer on Dr. Hilyard?" Melissa asked "Ten minutes" a nurse said. 

Scott sat down next to the woman "Uh...You know, I think I read online that sometimes human contact can help with pain" Scott said and the woman nodded,  Scott reach for her arm and he started to take away the pain making the woman relaxed. 

"Someone...someone help!" someone suddenly shouted that made Scott, Harper and James looked over at the entrance and they saw Ethan helping Danny into the hospital "I need help" Ethan said. 

Harper, James and Scott ran over to Danny while Melissa help him in an empty chair "Okay. Okay, gentle, gentle, gentle!" she said as they sat him down. 

Scott then grabbed Ethan "What did you do to him?" he asked "Nothing" Ethan said "What happened?" Harper asked "He said he was having chest pains and trouble breathing, but it just kept getting worse" Ethan said "This is not good" Melissa said, she then looked over at the nurse at the desk "How much longer on Dr. Hilyard?" she asked, but the nurse shook her head. 

Melissa then looked back at Danny "His larynx has shifted to the side. I think it's a tension pneumothorax" Melissa said, but then Danny threw himself forward and started to vomiting all over the floor "Mistletoe" Ethan said.

Melissa wheeled Danny into a operating room with Ethan, Scott, James and Harper right behind her. 

"Can you four please go back to the waiting room?" Melissa said, but they just kept following her. 

"Where are the nurses and the doctors? Where is everyone?" Ethan asked "It's a full house tonight. They're tending to other patients" Melissa said "Okay. Well, Mom, how can we help?" Scott asked "Honey, you three can't. His lung is collapsed. His heart is being pushed against his chest cavity now" Melissa said "He's gonna die, isn't he?" James asked "No. No, he's not. Scott, you grab the tape" Melissa said pointing at Scott before she pointed at Ethan "You grab those scissors and cut his shirt open" Melissa said before she turned to Harper and James "You two hold his hands down, because this is going to hurt" she said and the four raced to do what she said while Melissa grabbed a large syringe.
