A wilting mossball flew through the air. Lightkit pawed it before it landed. Thunderpelt bumped it with his flank, hitting it towards Russetkit. The three of them went on for a while, until their game was interrupted.
"Come on, Thunderpelt! We're waiting for you!" Hawktooth, the deputy called. Thunderpelt apologetically turned towards his kits.
"I'll be back as soon as I can." The ginger tom nuzzled his kits quickly, before catching up with the rest of the patrol.
"I hate sun-high patrols." Russetkit hissed, sniffling a yawn.
"Russetkit! Lightkit!" Hailshade called from the nursery. "It's time for your nap."
"But we're not tired!" Lightkit protested to his mother. Hailshade gave a stern look, and both kits reluctantly trotted to the nursery.
When the kits entered, Hailshade routinely rolled onto her side to allow her kits to drink her milk. While they were suckling, her and the other queen, Squirreldust, were talking. Squirreldust's belly was getting rounder and rounder each day. She was expecting Thistlesong's kits.
"You better keep an eye on Hawktooth. The elder's have been gossiping about her having feelings for Thunderpelt!" The fluffy queen mewed.
"Now what makes those elders think that?" Hailshade responded.
"The elder's keep going on and on about how they grew up together, and how Hawktooth keeps putting him on patrols with her." Squirreldust explained, entertainment still in her voice.
"Well Hawktooth better keep her distance from my mate, or else she gets the claws!" Hailshade purred, holding up her black paw.
"Yeah, you go, molly!" They both purred together, until Russetkit and Lightkit were finished suckling.
"Alright you two, time to nap." Hailshade swished her tail over her kits.
"Before you put the kits to bed, could one of them ask Stormshrew for some juniper berries?" Squirreldust requested.
"I'll do it!" Russetkit leaped out of the nest.
"I'll go too!" Lightkit added, before they both raced towards the medicine den. They nearly tripped over their own paws.
Inside the stone medicine den, Stormshrew was inspecting Whitepaw's pad. The apprentice seemed to have gotten a burr stuck in his paw pad. Mousefire was nearby, inspecting her former apprentice's work.
"Stormshrew! Stormshrew!" Russetkit called. "Squirreldust wants some jump-ier berries!"
"Jump-ier berries?" The grey and brown medicine cat stifled a purr. "You mean juniper berries?" He turned towards the herb store, and bundled a few blue-colored berries into a leaf. He placed the bundle in front of the kits, then went back to examining Whitepaw's pad.
"Thanks Stormshrew!" Lightkit squeaked, befor when grabbed the bundle. The two kits raced back to the nursery, plopping the bundle in front of Squirreldust.
"Oh, thank you kits." Squirreldust mewed, before eating the berries. "You know, Hailshade, you should let them play a bit longer." The queen proposed. "Leaf-bare had just started, and we're lucky enough to get no snow yet."
Hailshade pondered for a moment, then huffed. "Alright, but only for a little longer. And don't go prying into warrior business!" The queen instructed, as the two kits rushed out again.
Soon enough, Thunderpelt and the rest of the patrol returned. He quickly approached his kits. "Skipping your nap?" He mewed, pawing at them.
"Hailshade is letting us play for a little longer, since there's no snow yet." Lightkit responded.
"Well, you two can finish your game of moss-ball. I haven't eaten since before dawn!" He nuzzled his kits one last time, before trotting over to Hawktooth, who was eating a hare.
As Russetkit and Lightkit played with the wilting mossball, Lightkit would be able to hear parts of the conversation his father and the deputy were having.
"We were lucky to have caught this hare in leaf-bare." Thunderpelt said in between mouthfuls.
"Yeah. And this hare is so juicy!" Hawktooth took another big bite. It made Lightkit wish he could have a bite. Since he and Russetkit were only a moon old, he was stuck with small shrews and milk before their sunhigh nap.
Suddenly, and ear-splitting caw rang through camp, as a shadow circled around the two kits.
"Falcon!" Snowpaw howled from the elder's den, her paws still covered in mouse bile.
"Russetkit! Lightkit! Inside!" Hailshade howled. Both kits looked up at the sky to see a large feathery body swooping right towards them. Lightkit couldn't move. He was too scared. He saw other warriors rushing to help them, but the falcon was faster.
Talons gripped Russetkit's pelt briefly. Lightkit wanted to yowl in fear, but his jaws wouldn't move. When Russetkit was merely a claw-length from the ground, a grey pelt dashed over and bit the falcon's foot.
The falcon dropped Russetkit and the grey pelt leaped on top of the two kits. Snowpaw was standing over them, shielding them from the hungry predator. Lightkit noticed the falcon's shadow getting smaller, as if it were retreating. Snowpaw grabbed the their scruffs and bolted for the nursery.
Snowpaw dropped the kits in Hailshade's nest. The black queen wrapped herself around then, licking their pelts. Russetkit's back was bleeding from the falcon's talons, but nothing too serious.
"Oh, thank you so much, Snowpaw!" Hailshade mewed. "StarClan bless you!" The queen couldn't help letting out a few sobs of relief.
Thunderpelt soon crashed in the nursery, his chest heaving. His gaze shot to his kits. Seeing them unharmed, he let out a huff of relief. He quickly collapsed near his kits and wrapped his tail around them and Hailshade.
"Snowpaw, thank you so much!" He purred, keeping his muzzle near Russetkit and Lightkit.
Lakebranch then bursted in, his eyes revealing worry. "Snowpaw! Are you alright?" The blue-grey mentor examined his apprentice. Her flank was scratched up minorly. "Go see Stormshrew and Mousefire. Before you get an infection!" He hurried ushered her out.
"Lakebranch, I'm okay. Just a few minor scratches." Snowpaw reassured. "Russetkit is still bleeding, she needs it more." They both turned towards the red kit. Two talon marks dotted her sides.
"I'll take her." Thunderpelt stood and grabbed his daughter's scruff. He trotted out in the direction of the medicine den.
"Come closer, Lightkit." Hailshade curled closer around her kit. She gave him more comforting licks behind his ears. "I love you so much."
"That was very brave of you, Snowpaw." Lakebranch turned towards his apprentice. "I think you're ready for your assessment."
Snowpaw gasped. "Really?" She purred. "What about Thornpaw and Whitepaw?"
"Your littermates will get assessed when they're ready." The tom reassured.
Lightkit's mind was racing. Between the falcon, his sister's injury, and the thought that one day he'll get a warrior assessment, it all exhausted him. He soon felt himself drifting off in his mother's warmth.
