I woke up to the sound of my alarm going off. "Falling" by Opia was playing. I really liked this artist, as his name reminded me of mine- unique. Unique is not something that I've ever wanted to be; I've always tried to blend in with the crowd. With eyes as blue as the sky in the middle of summer, I've always stood out, always been called unique, and I've always been called pretty, even though I'd rather be recognized for my academic success.
Anyways, I reluctantly got up and turned my alarm off. Throwing on a pair of black leggings, a random hoodie on my floor, and a beat up pair of AF1's, I went downstairs, only to be greeted by my best friend, Layla. "Ophelia! It's about time you got up, sleepy head. I have so much to tell you!" She said, full of energy. I don't understand how she has this much energy at 7AM, but I guess it's just me, as my mom walks into the dining room with bacon and toast. "Hi, mom. Layla, you better calm down before I slap all of that energy right out of you. I am NOT a morning person," I grumbled.
"Okay, don't be mad at me, but I kind of sort of bought us tickets to the annual ball!" She exclaimed, knowing very well that dancing wasn't my thing. The annual ball was held around Christmas time, and it was hosted at a ballroom on the outskirts of the city. Everybody goes, but for the past 2 years, I haven't gone. Being occupied with homework and the future on my mind, the ball seemed worthless compared to my list of troubles.
Looking her dead in the eyes, I sighed, and started to eat my food. Things weren't going very well in my life, as my mom fell sick with cancer not even a month ago, and she hasn't been able to support us very well. I got a job to help out, as she can't work, so most of my time has gone to us and Layla. I needed a break, though, and I knew Layla did it out of her best intention, so I let it go, as she does things that I like and she doesn't. I'm so grateful to have her, as she pushes my boundaries, and helps me to get out of my shell and try new things. Out of our friend group, she's definitely the realest and the person who I know I'll have for a lifetime.
30 minutes and 3 pieces of bacon later, Layla was driving us to school. I have a car as well, a 2007 dodge charger. Layla and I switch around days that we drive, as we also pick up our other friend, Tyler. Personally, Tyler is the only boy that I'm particularly close to, as I've never had a dad, and boys have only meant trouble for me. The reason why I liked Ty so much is because he never asked questions. When I needed him to help me with homework, or when he knew that I hadn't gotten that much sleep last night, he never tried to pry. Sometimes it's nice to have that kind of relationship with someone- actions speak louder than words, and it's hard to find someone who understands you on a deep level like that. Pulling into his driveway, he came out and stepped into Layla's Jeep.
"Hey guys! How's it going?" he said, forgetting that it's only Monday, and that all Monday's are bad. "It's going okay," said Layla, answering for the both of us. "Did you break the news to her, Layla?" Ty said, sounding excited. "Yes, I did! She agreed to come with us!" exclaimed Layla, clearly happy that she got her way. That's the thing with Layla- she's really good at expressing her emotions through the way she says things. When she's upset with you, it won't be too hard to put 2 and 2 together. "Thank you guys for thinking of me," I said, grateful to know that they care, "but we need to go shopping! All 3 of us. Ty, you definitely need a new suit, and Layla and I need some dresses that'll make everyone's heads turn!" Layla looked over at me, surprised that I was getting into this as much as I was. I'm not gonna lie, dressing up sounded like a lot of fun. Little did I know, this would catch the attention of the wrong person.
As we pulled into the school parking lot, we were immediately met with couples adorning the sidewalk, holding hands and whispering sweet nothings into the other's ear. Having no dad in my life, you could say that I have no faith in boys. There's been some who have tried to date me, and I almost accepted, until my thoughts consumed me and I turned them down.
