That night it rained. And when I say 'rained' I mean absolutely poured rain! There were occasional claps of thunder too. To add to the suspense there were flashes of lightning that seemed to be getting closer to us.
That's when it happened. Before I could react a bolt of lightning had hit a tree in front of us and had started a fire. The fire whirled out of control as we ran from it. The younger kids were terrified, it was like nothing they had ever seen before.
As we ran trees we falling all around us. One massive flaming tree fell and blocked our path. The flames around us had circled us, haunting us. I tried to think quick but me mind was in a spin. I looked up to see the smoke rising to the sky. That's when I had the idea.
One by one I flew each person out of the fire and to safety. As I dropped Alex down I flew back for the last person, Beth. She had volunteered to go last. I landed back in the fire ring, searching for Beth in the smoke. I saw her crouched down in the middle of the ring. The fire had spread rapidly and had made the ring smaller that it had been. I ran to Beth. "Let's get out of here!" I yelled.
I picked her up and leaped upward. The heat of the fire was making my wings stiff and sore. When I was above all the trees I started falling. The pain had become too much for me to handle. But summoning all my strength I flung Beth to safety where she was caught by Ryan. I fell towards the ground. The burning ground. I had little time to think before I whacked my back off the earth, immediately feeling pain and then burning... Then nothing at all...
