-----------------------I awoke early on a Sunday morning. When I say early, I mean six o' clock in the morning early, an ungodly hour if you must. I tried for a half hour to get back to sleep but my mind was completely alert and wouldn't let me fall back into a deep slumber. So I did what I always did when my sleeping pattern was flabbergasted, I stepped outside onto the balcony.
The sun hadn't even risen properly yet. It was still sitting low in the sky hidden behind clouds of mist. I sighed heavily and pulled the familiar box out of my pocket. Cigarettes weren't something I agreed much with but when I was stressed I usually smoked a cigarette in attempt to calm me down. In California I usually got packets in this small shop ran by an old Mexican man, he would serve me, although I was 6 years underage I guess I looked a little older than usual to the little bald man that always sported a grin. Since the legal age was eighteen here I just asked Ashton to buy them for me. Although I wondered how that little Mexican man was doing. I wondered how everyone back in America was doing. I quickly calculated what time it was in America before grabbing my phone and dialling my moms mobile phone. It was only two pm she was bound to be available. While I waited for her to answer, I lit my cigarette with my pink lighter taking a drag, letting the smoke fill my lungs before I exhaled releasing it into the air in a big whirl. I watched it evaporate into nothing, mindlessly before a voice coming from the other end of the receiver snapped me back to reality.
"Hello?" My mothers familiar voice answered making my heart flutter. Her maternal instinct kicked in and she squealed lightly realising that it was me calling off an international number. I smiled down looking at the burning stick between my fingers.
"Hey mom" I spoke quietly afraid to wake up the neighbours at such an early hour.
"Aimi my darling! How are you?" She beamed basically asking me to tell her everything I've done the past few weeks. I grunted because my cigarette dropped on the floor, but covered it up with a cough before picking it up.
"I've been pretty good. You never told me it was winter out here" I laughed at my moms forgetful mind. She tutted and sounded like she patted her forehead.
"Oh shit Aimi it slipped my mind to tell you it's backwards there. Is it really cold? I can send you some money to buy warm clothes if you like?" She rambled worryingly. I chuckled.
"No it's fine mom. It's still absolutely boiling here. It's just weird that it's backwards here. Michael and the boys still have school and stuff"
"Michael and the boys?! Tell me!"
So I explained the whole story to my mom. She listened in great detail and gave me advice in even greater detail. I didn't think she understood quite as much though. She couldn't understand the feeling Luke gave me or the amount of butterflies he places in my stomach or the way he makes me smile even on the worst day of my life. She didn't understand like I did.
"All I'm saying honey is, maybe it's bad idea getting too involved with him. You're leaving in two months remember? And you don't wanna leave heartbroken, this is going to be a great summer for you Aimi if you let it be" She was completely and utterly right. I couldn't let this get in the way of my summer. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, not many kids my age can say they spent the whole summer in Australia living beside the beach surrounded by cute boys, good weather and amazing malls. I was gonna start to make the best of it.
"You're right mom. You're actually so right" I bit my nails contemplating lighting up a second cigarette.
"Momma is always right" She chuckled sighing.
"Look mom I gotta go, it's nearly seven am and I have some things to do today I wanna get ready" I pulled another cigarette out of the box. I pretty much felt her smile through the phone.
"Okay my love. I'll call another day. I love you!"
"I love you too mom, bye"
And she was gone. I muttered to myself incoherently as I tried to light up the second stick with my lighter. But the light breeze would always quench the light just as I would nearly have the stick lit up.
"Cup your hand around the lighter"
I squeaked loudly and dropped the lighter out of my hand. I snapped my head up to face a smirking Luke Hemming's leaning against his balcony door. I rolled my eyes and muttered a thanks using Luke's technique and successfully lighting it.
"So, you doing much today?" He inquired trying to make conversation. I shook my head.
"I don't think so, what about you?" I asked tipping the ashes letting them float into the air beneath the balcony floor.
"Nah. I'm always free on Sunday's because my mum makes me do homework on Friday's"
I snorted loudly. Did he really just say that out loud? It made him sound like the biggest mommy's boy known to man.
"What?" He asked his voice laced with humour.
"Does mommy make Lukey do all his homework after school?" I said in a childish voice earning a loud laugh from Luke. I looked over at him. His eyes were creased at the sides because his face was scrunched up from laughter. His smile was the best part though. It was wide and bright. His perfect teeth on show and his dimples prominent. I couldn't help but just smile at him.
"They're gonna kill you" Luke said a little more seriously pointing at the burning cigarette in my hand.
I chuckled a little less humourlessly than I should have. Closing my eyes for a moment before taking another drag. I watched the smoke float into an oblivion of nothingness in front of me before I turned to Luke.
"These might not stop my heart, but I know something else that will"
He stared at me in confusion, his left eyebrow raised. I couldn't speak to him any longer. My chest was already hurting. I dropped the half finished stick on the floor of the balcony and stamped on it to make sure the flame was gone out.
"I'll see you later Luke" I mumbled stepping inside. But just as I turned around to close the door behind me. I stared out to where Luke was standing. He was stood there staring at the spot where I once stood, scratching the back of his head with a loose frown on his face. He must have thought I was completely out of earshot because I heard him mutter something before he turned back to go into his room.
"Oh Aimi.. If only you knew"
Knew what Luke?
