Looking through the back window of the taxi I was now sitting in, I couldn’t help smiling as my Mum disappeared around the corner. As my phone vibrated against my hip, I fished it from the pocket of my jeans and couldn’t help cracking another smile. ‘Cal’ flashed on the screen. I opened the text message from my best friend to discover that it read ‘Hey beautiful can’t wait to see you; miss you heaps!’ I chuckled to myself; my best friend had to be the sweetest human alive. Selecting the option to reply to Cal’s text, I wrote ‘Hey kiddo can’t wait to see you either; miss you more, loser!’ I knew come seeing Cal I’d pay for the ‘loser’ comment, if he even cared about that, after I called him ‘kiddo’ – meh, I thought, I’ll deal with it once I get off the plane...

I’d flown before, yeah; but never on my own. This made me slightly edgy. As if reading my mind from interstate, my phone vibrated, ‘Cal’ was on the screen again. He had called me this time, though; not texted. I answered the call, knowing that he’d come up with some way of making me feel better.

‘Hello?’ I asked down the line.

‘Kels!’ Calum said excitedly ‘It’s so good to hear your voice.’

I laughed. ‘Babe, you called me last night. You called me every night this week.’ I reminded him.

‘I know,’ he replied ‘I just miss you. A lot.’

‘I miss you too, darl,’ I told him. ‘Not long now and I’ll be seeing you, though!’

‘Damn it, hurry up and get here!’ He whined.

I laughed again. ‘You’re the biggest cutie.’

‘How are you feeling about the flight?’ Cal’s voice came hesitantly up the line.

‘Better, now. Thank you. It’s only an hour long flight, though, so it hopefully shouldn’t be too bad.’

‘Just put your headphones in and have a nap, love.’ Cal suggested, knowing full well I probably would have done just that, anyway.

‘Yeah,’ I sighed; ‘wish you could sing to me, it’d help more than anything else.’

‘I’ll sing to you when you get here, promise.’ Cal laughed.

This made me laugh and before I knew it, the taxi driver was getting out from behind the drivers’ seat and taking my luggage from the boot.

‘I’ve got to go, kid;’ I told him; ‘just got to the airport. Going to have to grab my stuff and run.’ I explained.

‘Aw, no; don’t leave me yet,’ Cal pleaded ‘and stop calling me ‘kid!’’ He added. ‘I’m older than you!’

I just laughed. ‘Lub choo,’ I told him with a smile; ‘I’ll see you in a couple hours.’

‘Lub choo, too; sweetie. Before you go, can I ask you something?’

‘Well you just did,’ I pointed out, but ‘cause I lub choo so much, I guess you can ask me something else.’

‘Smart arse,’ Calum chuckled. ‘I was telling the boys that your Mum was flying you down, and Luke was saying he’d like to come to the airport with us to come get you,’ he explained; ‘would that be alright with you?’

‘The boys?’ I asked, ‘As in, the band?’

‘Yeah,’ Cal answered. ‘I talk about you a fair bit,’ he admitted. ‘If you don’t want Luke to be at the airport, I can sort it out, no worries.’

‘No,’ I told him, ‘it’s not that, Luke can come with you if he wants, I was just making sure we were both talking about the same people.’

‘You sure?’ Cal asked, ‘If it bothers you, tell me; I won’t be upset, it’s not a big deal.’

‘It’s not a problem; it doesn’t bother me,’ I assured him, ‘really.’ I added. ‘Now,’ I went on, will you please let me hang up, so I can catch this plane and come see you?’

‘Fine!’ He sighed. ‘You owe me cuddles, though!’

‘Excuse me, Mr Hood,’ I laughed, ‘but if anything, it’s you that owes me cuddles, not the other way around.’

‘Truce?’ Cal suggested.

‘You wait ‘til I see you; you little shit,’ I laughed, ‘this is not over.’

‘Yeah, okay babe,’ Calum laughed ‘whatever gets choo on dat plane.’

‘Don’t you laugh at me’ I told him.

‘Choo lub me, don’t deny it.’ Cal answered.

‘Yeah, well, someone has to, don’t they?’ I joked. Calum pretended to be offended. I just laughed.

‘I always forget how mean you are to me,’ he sulked.

‘Oh, poor diddums,’ I said sarcastically rolling my eyes. ‘You know you shouldn’t play with fire unless you can handle being burned, bub.’

‘Don’t you ‘bub’ me,’ Cal sulked; ‘I’m mad at you.’

‘Choo lub me,’ I laughed, ‘you know it’s true.’

‘Someone has to’, he replied, mocking my previously made statement.

‘Oh look,’ I joked ‘Baby boy thinks he’s being funny.’

‘I am funny, bitch!’ Calum protested

I laughed, ‘Don’t ‘bitch’ me, Mr.’ ‘I really need to go now,’ I added, ‘so I need you to behave and hang up, okay?’

‘Don’t talk to me like I’m a child,’ he replied miserably, I could practically see him pouting; ‘it’s not nice.’

Letting myself out of the taxi, I laughed, ‘See you soon, you dope; lub choo!’

‘Bye precious, lub choo more!’ Cal replied happily, ‘Text me when you get off the plane!’ He added.

‘Will do, promise.’ I laughed and ended the call before Calum could say anything else.
