‘I will never get that.’ Luke sounded exasperated. ‘Get what?’ I asked. ‘That look that girls share with each other. What does it even mean?!’ he asked. I shrugged and noticed that he had begun swinging our hands back and forth between the two of us.  ‘It doesn’t have a universal meaning,’ I explained. ‘It means whatever we need it to mean, depending on the context in which we use it.’ ‘That is pointless.’ Luke said. ‘Not really.’ I replied. ‘It’s probably our equivalent to that nod guys share with each other.’ I continued casually. ‘The ‘sup’ nod?’ Luke enquired. ‘Is that what you call it? I didn’t even know it had a name.’ ‘Of course it has a name, babe.’ So tell me what this ‘sup’ nod is supposed to mean then, if you’re going to be a jerk about it.’ I told him.

‘What it means,’ Luke began smartly, ‘is exactly what the name suggests it means. ‘Hi, what’s up? How’ve you been?’ He looked at me, to make sure I understood. ‘Sometimes,’ he went on, ‘some guys use it when they walk past an attractive girl.’ He paused ‘I don’t know why, though...’ he admitted. ‘You don’t?’ I asked. ‘You’re a guy,’ I said, ‘you are a guy, aren’t you, Luke?’ I joked. ‘Isn’t sort of your job to know that kind of thing?’ I added. ‘I just think there are more appropriate ways to tell people you’re into a girl.’ He reasoned. ‘I don’t care what people say,’ he went on, ‘there is nothing wrong with showing a girl respect.’
