‘But,’ Luke looked from Calum to me and back again in confusion. ‘The way you two act together,’ he went on slowly in a small voice, ‘it’s like you’ve been head over heels in love with each other forever.’ He looked between us again in sad disbelief, as if hoping that Calum and I would own up to pulling a practical joke on him or something.
‘Kels and I do love each other,’ Cal informed his friend, I couldn’t help feeling as though he were a father, and Luke was an innocent young child being told his parents were getting divorced. ‘But we’re not in love. We’re best friends. Always have been, always will be.’ He looked at me, and then at Luke before continuing, ‘we talked about whether or not we thought anything else could ever happen between us, but there’s nothing there for either of us when it comes to those kind of feelings towards each other. So there’s no point pretending that there is. It wouldn’t be fair to either of us.’
‘Cal’s right. He and I, we’re like family,’ I told Luke, ‘having that kind of connection is easy for us, but it always seems more complicated than that to other people. They assume that we’re together, or that one of us want more than what we have, but trust me,’ I paused for a minute. ‘Trust us,’ I amended, ‘being in a relationship just wouldn’t work for us.’
‘I never meant to upset either of you,’ Luke said. ‘I shouldn’t have pushed it, I’m sorry.’
‘Neither of us is upset, man.’ Cal pointed out, ‘we get that kind of thing all the time, and we don’t make a big deal of it.’ He paused. ‘Relax.’ He went on, seeing his friend was still beating himself up. ‘We were both expecting at least one of you to say something, anyway. We knew we’d have to explain at some point while Kelsie’s here, whether one of you asked about it, or whether we just sat you all down and had a conversation like this.’
‘He’s like a ball of cotton wool on legs that has the ability to communicate with us!’ I chuckled. Cal excused himself and pulled his phone from his pocket as his ringtone started playing.
