"Niagara" *
Sea Monster spitting mists and vapors
Flashing showers of white foam
Furiously rolling coils of green light
And a vertigo of crystalline scales
Niagara Sea Monster
Roaring down into hosts of mirthful little foam snakes
Only the birds dancing in your mists
Only the birds playing with your rainbow
Know the sweet caress of divine light
Only the lingering spirits of the ancient Indians
Still praise thy magnificent horror
In a long-forgotten or fading dream
Look at the dark human insects
In that nutshell of a boat
How dare they challenge your dreadful splendor!
As once kingly elephants are teased in a zoo
They have bitten into your flesh
With jaws of concrete dams
Sucking your blood
To tame your once beautiful shrine of wild nature
In a never-ending show-fair
Niagara Sea Monster of the old Indian land
You took me
Leaning over your whirling crystal-green mirrors
You took me merged spell-bound
Into your crystal-green waters
On the swift boat of dreams
And I had to cling fast
Travelling backward backward
Within one eternal minute
At last really alive?
To the time when the gods spoke to men
In gentle murmurs and glittering thunders
Of love for old Mother Earth
