The jury came back a half hour later, and once again, I found myself sitting in that dreadful courtroom in the front row of seats. The witness stand was empty.
The judge turned towards the jury. "Jury, on the charge of kidnapping in the first degree, how do you find the defendant, Lynx Darker?" The first person in the jury stands stood and held his hands together in front of him.
"On the charge of kidnapping, we found the defendant, Lynx Darker-" there was a short pause as he took a small deep breath. "Not guilty." I let out a huge breath I didn't know I was holding in.
"On the charge of rape in the second degree, how do you find the defendent?" The same jury man spoke again. "We find the defendant not guilty, your Honor." The judge nodded and faced forward. "Will the defendant rise?" Jinx stood and looked up at the judge.
"Miss. Darker, you are released on your own recognizance. Officers will escort you out where you'll be allowed to retrieve your personal items." The judge stood. "All rise. We thank the jury for their time. This court is adjourned." She banged the gavel.
I jumped up and ran to the front of the courtroom where Jinx was, and threw my arms around her neck, hugging her tightly as tears of relief streamed down my face. She held me tight, kissing my lips hard.
"I love you," I whispered, burying my face in her neck. She gently stroked my hair. "I love you too, baby."
Tommy watched us from the exit and shook his head slowly with disappointment, then walked out the door. I went with the officer and Jinx to retrieve her personal items, then we were able to leave.
In my car, Jinx held my hand as I drove us to her place. She looked over at me, somewhat nervously. "Why did you do that?" I glanced over to her then back at the road.
"Do what?"
"Lie. That's against the law and you could have gotten in trouble." I shrugged.
"Only you and I know the truth, and it is going to stay that way. I love you, Jinx. I couldn't let you get put away." she kissed the back of my hand and gave it a small squeeze.
She didn't have to say that she loved me for me to know. I already knew.
