Chapter 1

Ophelia sat in the carriage mindlessly picking at her finger nails. She knew it was a poor habit to have, but it kept her hands moving. She couldn't stand sitting still, especially when she's nervous. And if she was being honest with herself, what wasn't there to be nervous about?

Ms. Amy took one look at the young girl and promptly slapped her hands. She'd had to do it every few minutes, seeing as the girl couldn't seem to stop. "You really must stop Ms. Darling."

Ophelia gave her a small nod, eyes never straying from her hands. Her fingers danced over each other in her lap, desperately trying to do anything besides pick at her nails. She looked out the window, thinking that perhaps the scenery would help settle her worried mind.

The girl smiled to herself as she watched the trees pass her by. It had been quite a while since she had been to visit Diana and her family in the country. It had probably been since Diana's 10th birthday a few years ago.

They had worn frilly dresses and had a tea party in the Barry's garden with Diana's friends. The maids had done all of the girls' hair and served them small cakes and cups of tea. Ophelia remembered the scolding she received from her Aunt Eliza when she saw all the grass stains on her white dress.

She found a smile ghosting her lips at the memory, thinking that perhaps this wouldn't be as horrible as she thought. Diana was lovely, and school would start soon. She'd be able to make friends there and before she even knew it, Aunt Trudie would be well and she'd be sent back home to Charlottetown.

"Diana!" Ophelia had jumped out of the carriage before it even stopped, her knees buckling slightly as she hit the ground.

"Ophelia!" The raven hair girl returned, ignoring her mother's protests as she ran toward her cousin.

The two reached each other and shared a long awaited embrace. Ophelia had to bend over to wrap her arms around Diana, seeing as one was so short and the other so tall. They laughed as they stepped away, unable to lose the smiles on their faces.

Diana looked just as she remembered, her brown eyes wide and curious, hair falling in loose waves and that were just as dark. Ophelia on the other hand, had changed so much in the years apart. Her hair had grown long and the bangs that laid on her forehead were new to Diana, but the biggest difference was her height. When she had last visited she had been about the sane height as Diana, now she was nearly a head taller. Ophelia was certainly taller than any of the girls their age, maybe even taller than the boys.

Diana looped her arm through Ophelia's having to reach up slightly to do so. As they walked together towards the house Diana spoke, "Alright Fee, you simply must tell me everything about your big city life."
