Scout woke up, his head hurt. he didn't know where he was. all he could hear was ringing in his ears like a grenade went off right next to him. he lifted himself off the ground weakly but fell back down.

what happened? Scout thought. he just laid there, not knowing what to do. suddenly, someone kneeled down next to him. he felt them grab his wrist and check his pulse.

so far, the ringing in his ears has faded down. he could just barely hear the person say in a slightly muffled voice — probably due to the man wearing a mask, "this one's alive." Just then, more people came by and picked him up. he was slightly nauseous, so he couldn't see the people carrying him.

    Soon, scout passed out again.

Once Sniper got off the roof, it was almost pitch black outside. the only thing he could see was the nearby fires of cars and buildings. he pulled out a lighter for some light. Sniper fumbled around, tripping over what he hoped was rocks.

he noticed a building that looked in slightly good condition. he could see a little bit of light coming through the boarded windows. even if it may seem like a nice place, there could still be enemies in there.

Sniper found the entrance, readied his knife, and slowly opened the door. he snuck through the small hallway, opening several doors on his way to the end. all of the rooms were empty. once he got to the last door at the end of the hallway, he slowly opened it. it creaked, making Sniper cringe.

There were people there. he didn't know if they were enemies or if they were good and just defending themselves. there were five; four standing up, pointing guns at him, and one laying down. the one laying down had a huge gash on his stomach and cuts everywhere. I wonder what got him. Sniper thought.

The ones that were pointing guns at him were wearing some sort of armor. one was wearing bands around her arms, indicating that she was a medic. Maybe she can fix my shoulder. Sniper thought.

"Who are you?" one of them, presumably the leader of the small group, asked.

"Please, I mean no harm. I-I just need to know where I am and how I can get to that big building." Sniper pleaded. he had his hands up in the air.

"I'll ask you again. Who are you?"

"M-my name is," Sniper stopped himself from telling the group that his name — more like his code name — was Sniper, "it's Dave."

"ok, Dave, where are you from? you can't just be here without knowing anything unless you had some sort of memory loss." the medic said.

"Just tell me what's going on. what are those big green things?" Sniper asked.

"those are called antlions. they can be very dangerous. I can tell you've run into one, because of your shoulder."

"Yeah, it got my arm pretty bad." Sniper lied, he didn't want to tell these people his whole backstory and how he's from a different timeline.

"Here, come with me and I'll patch you up." Sniper went with the medic, and she put his shoulder back in place. she also told him where they were. it was a city called City 17. Kind of weird. the big building is the Citadel, a huge prison, and headquarters for the Combine. the Combine is an alien race that took over the world.

does this really happen in the future, or did I travel to an alternate dimension? Sniper questioned.

Sniper decided to stay with those people. they called themselves the Resistance. The story is, every citizen in this city was forced to be here. the Combine monitored their lives 24/7. one day, they had enough of it, and they decided to fight back. City 17 has big machines all around, made by the Combine. He has seen Combine on his journey with the Resistance to the Citadel. the Combine Overwatch was the Combine's military. the Combine Overwatch were heavily armored transhumans — humans who have been modified — with some sort of gas masks on. they carried big guns, some that he'd never seen before.
