Chapter 1

Kate's POV

I sighed quietly to myself. Just breathe Kate. Let it all out. I got up off of the ground, shifted into my human form, and continued along the trail. As I ran along the path I admired the soft clean snow still resting on the trees. I loved running in the woods, it was one of the few things I could do to clear my head. As soon as I got to the end of the loop I paused. I know they say not to go running off the trails because there could be rouges or hunters and they didn't want me to get hurt, I am the future Luna after all, but I didn't really care. So I turned and slipped through the trees. I started going faster, faster, suddenly I couldn't see anything but the blur of green and white beside m- Bang! A gunshot went off to my right. I knew what that meant... hunters. So I did what any normal person (or werewolf) would do, I ran left. I could hear footsteps running behind me, I was being chased. I leapt over logs and slid under branches, not even bothering to think about where I was going. I moved on instinct.
Luna! I hear Derek, my guard, shout through the mind link. You have to get back to the pack house. There are hunters near the north border. Where are you?!
Umm... Near the north border.
What?!
That's not the worst of it, one of them is chasing me!
What?!?!?! Oh moon goddess! Just... Just run in the direction of the pack house, I'll send reinforcements.
I can't! I scream, panic lacing my voice. He's chasing me from the direction of the pack house. I'm headed the opposite way.
Wait no don't go that w-
I can't focus while I'm talking to you I have to go. I cut him off and block off my mind. I have to keep running. I run and run and run for what seems like hours when suddenly I burst through the trees... To see I'm standing on a cliff, and not just any old cliff, no, I'm standing on the cliff locally known as free fall. One hundred feet down into the ocean filled with jagged rocks. Not only that but it's mid-November so the water will be freezing, I'll probably die of hypothermia in minutes if I fall. I step forward until I'm right at the edge and immediately I feel sick. Suddenly, the bushes shake and my pursuer bursts out, I scream as loud as I can and then look past them and to my right to see my pack members on the beach down below looking up at me with horror in their eyes. I turn back to the person in front of me and freeze.
"Look at me!" they demand but I'm too busy staring at the gun they have pointed in my direction.
"Please", I squeak out.
Come on Kate don't be a baby, you're strong! You know what you have to do! My wolf (Rain) yells at me. Suddenly I gather up all the courage I can muster and lunge for the gun- Bang! I hear screams but they are not mine. They are coming from down below where my pack has just witnessed me get shot. I stumble backwards and look down to see red dripping from my chest, directly over my heart. I hear someone running away through the forest, presumably my shooter. Then suddenly I'm falling, not like in a peaceful way, I'm literally falling off the cliff. This is it, I think, as I brace myself for the icey water down below, then everything goes black.

Blake's POV

I pull my car into our driveway and hop out, dragging my shopping bags with me. I struggle getting the door open then kick it shut with my foot. I drop my bags on the ground and head towards the living room.
"Kate, I am so going to ki-". I gasp, sitting on our sofa is Alpha Richard, Beta Michael, and Kate's guard, what was his name... Oh right, Derek. "Alpha. I apologize. I didn't know you were here".
"It's fine, come sit". He snaps and motions me over to the couch. That's when I notice Michael and Derek's eyes are bloodshot and red-rimmed, as if they've been crying. Whereas the alpha just looks tense and angry.
"Is something wrong?" I ask even though I know the answer already.
"We have something to tell you", Michael begins.
"Okay, if you like I can go find Kate. She was supposed to meet me at the mall a few hours ago but she never showed so she must be around here somewhere", I start to get up.
"No", I sit back down. "I actually came to talk to you about Kate... There were hunters in the area", I tense. "She was out running and-".
"No", I cut him off. "Please don't", I whisper, tears starting to burn my eyes.
"I'm so sorry but we weren't fast enough to-".
"No!" I shout, standing up. "She's not dead!!", tears are now flowing down my face.
"She is", he says quietly.
"I want to see the body. I won't believe it until I see the body!"
"There is no body".
I spin around "What!?"
"He chased her to the cliffs, shot her with a silver bullet... She fell, in front of all of our eyes". I gasp, clutching my heart.
"But, the caves! There are caves under the cliffs she could have washed up in one of those or on the beach or-"
"No. We checked there already. We checked everywhere. We searched and searched, but all we found was her blood on some rocks. She must have been swept away by the ocean".
"No", I whisper, hiccuping as I continue to ball my eyes out. He moves to say something else but I don't want to hear it, I make a mad dash up the stairs and to my room, slam the door, throw myself on the bed and cry. I know they can hear me as I continue to cry and cry and cry. Then I hear the door downstairs close softly. Kate was the only thing I had here, I no longer had a reason to stay. My parents were dead, I certainly wasn't going to find my mate here, without her I had no ties to this pack, so I stood up and started grabbing my stuff and some of Kate's stuff. Then I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote my goodbyes.

Dear Alpha,
Without my best friend here I have no reason to stay in your pack. You ought to just die in a hole. You are the sorriest excuse of an alpha I have ever seen. Her death was not the warrior's fault, nor the guard's fault, it wasn't even the hunter's fault, it was yours. You were her alpha, you were supposed to protect her! Not only as a pack member but as a fiancé as well. You deserve all the pain that this causes you and I hope you rot! I hope this pack will survive despite who is leading it! Have a nice life asshole.
Sincerely,
Blake

With that said I went downstairs, grabbed my shopping bags and hopped in my car. I disabled the GPS and took the battery and SIM card out of my phone. Then I pulled out of the driveway and didn't turn back. I drove for about forty-five minutes until I pulled up to the old hotel on the outside of the city and went straight to the elevator with my bags. I went up to the fourth floor and walked the halls until I reached room 418. I knocked three times and waited. A few seconds later the door swung open and there she stood in her favorite navy blue pajamas, her long tan legs on display, her long wavy caramel-colored hair in a messy bun on top of her head, her bright turquoise eyes sparkling as she looked at me and said, "Well it took you long enough".
I fake gasped, "How rude!", I exclaimed. "Kate you really need to work on your manners". She laughed and hugged me, then I stepped inside and she closed the door behind us.
