"I can't get there on my own, you can't leave me here alone." - Kings of Leon
The two adapted to the hospital life pretty easily. Jacian got his IV treatments and Arabella got checked by the nurses out of the goodness of their hearts. It was as if no matter where they were, life was better when they were in each other's company.
"Wait, what did you even do for him to do that to you?" Jacain asked.
"Easy. I stood up to him," Arabella shifted the ice pack, "Not very well, I suppose."
"You said he didn't hit you often."
"I didn't stand up to him often."
"Do regret it?"
"Not in this lifetime or the next." She smiled.
"I heard you praying you know," He intertwined their hands gently, "I don't know how to explain it, but I like, I felt it."
"Do you believe in heaven?" There was an underlying innocence to the question. Maybe it was the tone, or the question itself. Either way, it tugged on his heartstrings.
"I don't know. Reincarnation sounds pretty cool to me."
"I don't think I'll go to heaven, if there is one that is."
"Why not?"
"I've done a lot of bad things. I am probably a lost cause." A heavy feeling sat in the pit of her stomach. Lost was a common word for her, yet her least favorite one. If there even was a chance for her, should she grasp it?
Jacian is okay, its what you wanted. You should at least try to find out if God is real.
"Well there is only one thing left to do." Jacian pulled out his phone and entered the app store, downloading the bible.
"Which is? God, you're killing me with the suspense."
"Hey!," He reached out and ruffled her hair affectionately, "First rule of all this, you can't say his name in vain."
"Uh, I am pretty sure that the first rule is 'No other gods before him', according to Moses."
"Look at you, already having the common knowledge." A smile overtook his face and he loved how easy this felt.
"Everyone has common knowledge." She said flatly.
"What are you kids up to?" Evelyn walked into the hospital room, a smile radiant on her face. She was walking elegance, there was never a hair out of place on her head and her makeup was always intact. Arabella did not know what to think of it, but she must be a wonderful lady to be able to raise someone as lovely as her son, "I brought pancakes."
Yup, a wonderful lady indeed.
"Thanks mom, you're the best."
"Why Evelyn," Arabella stood up to embrace her, "We are on a quest to find the holy savior. Any pointers?"
"Wow, I was not expecting that at all," Evelyn smiled, trying to conceal her shock, "I have a Bible in my purse if you guys would like it."
"It's okay-," Jacian was abruptly cut off with Arabella's enthusiastic 'yes please.' He looked at her incredulously.
"What?" She asked, feigning innocence on her features.
"We have the bible already."
"Yeah, but," the book was placed in her hands and she smiled down on it in her hands, "books are just so much better."
