"My dad used to get panic attacks all the time, Calum, don't worry," I smiled at Calum and patted his back reassuringly.
"Yeah," he said awkwardly.
I understood why he felt awkward. He was talking to me about a topic that was obviously sensitive to him, so sensitive that he didn't seem speak to anyone else about it. We weren't walking anywhere in particular, so I stopped.
"Do you want to come to my house?" I asked nervously, tugging on my sleeves which is something I do often.
"Sure," he said coolly. "W-will anyone be home?"
"My sister maybe," I thought for a moment. "Maybe my dad? I don't know though."
We walked the rest of the way there and it took quite a while. Luke's house was like, the other side of town to me but because I stat active I was walking at quite a fast pace and Calum was struggling to keep up. I slowed down as we neared my road and Calum was by my side once again.
The door wasn't locked so I presumed it was Rachel who was home. I lead Calum through into the living room but stopped when I heard voices. Not because there were voices, but because I knew exactly who the voices belonged to. What were they doing here?
"Cassidy!" the shrill voice yelled, making Calum jump. "Is that you?"
I sighed. "Yes it's me. Who else would it be?"
My mother walked around the corner and eyed me up and down. "What are you wearing?"
"Clothes," I snapped.
Her gaze focused on Calum. "Who's this, then?"
"I'm Calum," he grinned. "Cassidy's friend."
"Right," she said, practically ignoring him. "Anyway, what are you doing? I'm taking you on holiday."
"I don't want to go on holiday," I shot back. Mum rolled her eyes. "Will... will he be there?"
"He has a name, Cassidy. And he's your brother, of course he'll be there."
"Then I'm definitely not going," I crossed my arms across my chest. "Besides, it's the first I've heard of all this. I'm not going."
Dad walked into the room, looking tired and annoyed. "Cas!" he said, relieved. "Who's this? Hey, you go to boxing, don't you?"
He clamped his hands over his mouth as soon as he said it, but it was too late. The cogs in my mother's brain could already be heard, ticking, and figuring it all out.
"How do you know Cassidy?" mum asked suspiciously. Her expression changed as she realised. "You haven't been going to that boxing club have you, Cassidy?"
"Um..."
"Cassidy Faith Fletcher, how dare you!" mum said, astonished. "And Niel, why on earth did you let her disobey me?"
"Listen, I-" dad started, but couldn't finish because mum slapped him. "Hey!"
Mum and dad looked about ready to kill each other so I decided to chip in.
"I'm not doing any harm boxing, am I? Just like Julia was never doing any harm with her gym," I said harshly.
Mum looked really really angry and I was slightly scared. Calum looked halfway between freaked out and disgusted by my mum, which was not a good sign. I grabbed Calum's wrist and dragged him up the stairs. I pushed him into my room before shouting 'I'm not going on holiday with you' and slamming the door.
"So that's your mum, huh," Calum chuckled lightly. "She's quite, um..."
"Neurotic?" I said light heartedly.
Calum grinned. "Neurotic to the bone no doubt about it."
"I didn't know she was going to be here, sorry," I said, suddenly self conscious of the face he'd seen my mum slap my dad. Calum saw my mum slap my dad. Good Lord. And he heard my full name; could it have gone any worse?
There was a small knock at the door and Rachel came into my room, sighing.
"Mums threatening to sue dad because she got a nail caught in his hair when she slapped him and it ripped off. Where the fuck is Daren, he needs to to take that psychotic bitch away," she noticed Calum and trailed off. "Oh, hi, didn't see you there, sorry."
"This is Calum, he does boxing with me," I said in monotone. "This is Rachel, she's my sister. Rachel; Calum, Calum; Rachel."
Rachel waved at Calum and he smiled back. "I asked her why she hit him right, seeing as she hasn't done it in a while, and she told me it was for feminism and the wellbeing of her two daughters."
"I feel a lot better when she goes away," I mumbled pathetically.
"She's not so bad, once you see past the spoiled brat syndrome and the fact she thinks everything is someone else's fault."
"I suppose," I said, feeling defeated.
She shouldn't have slapped him , I know. But she didn't do it hard and dad didn't take it offensively. She's just stupid, I guess. And selfish. Because I don't want to fucking go on holiday with her. Since when did she want to take me on holiday, anyway?
Calum's phone began to ring and that snapped me away from my thoughts. "Hello? Yeah. You're where?! As in here?! What! Yeah? Yeah! Ok, whatever, bye."
"What?" I asked.
"My mum wondering where I am," he said in a sulky tone. "I'd better go, I am supposed to be grounded. See ya, I hope your mom..."
I walked him downstairs and waved him off at the doorstep to avoid the inevitable question Rachel would be asking me. I managed to make it to my room but she stuck her foot between the frame and cleared her throat, making me look up.
"Where were you last night?" she asked, sounding somewhere between annoyed and concerned.
"I was at Calum's," I said, looking down. "And before you lecture me, it's your own fault for locking me out."
To my surprise, Rachel squealed and hugged me. "I can't believe you, Cassidy! Sneaking off, staying at. Mysterious boy's houses. You're growing up, darling!" She grabbed my cheeks, kissed them both and sauntered off into her bedroom.
I fell back on to my bed. Having friends, huh. I never would've said that was growing up.
