prompt - when in the same presence as their soulmate, a person's eyes glow. no one realized that ricky and nini's natural eye color we wasn't actually gold.

everyone was born with natural eye colors. once they met their soulmate, a persons eye color changed to either silver or gold. every time soulmates were around each other, their eyes would change to that color.

ricky bowen was born with deep brown eyes. nini salazar-roberts were also brown but more light.

one day, when ricky was five, he met nini in kindergarten. from that day on, his eyes were a metallic gold. nini's also were gold. due to their height, neither really could look at mirrors so the moment they found out was when the two five year olds were having a play date.

"woah! your eyes are yellow!" little nini shouted.

ricky leaned over and looked in her eyes. "your's are too!" thag was the first of many play dates between the soon to be best friends.

from that moment on, ricky and nini were inseparable. from constant play dates to always seeing each other at school, their eyes remained gold. however, the idea of soulmates hasn't been explained to either yet. besides, it was difficult to determine who your soulmate is.

every time ricky would show up to nini's with tears in his eyes, crying about the color in his parents eyes fading, she was always there to comfort him. both were unaware of how bright their eyes shined at that moment.

once both nini and ricky were explained the concept of the glowing eyes and soulmates, both were extremely oblivious of how their eyes turned gold around each other. besides, all of their friends only recognized them when their eyes were gold. hell, even on papers their eyes were labeled as gold.

at the end of junior year, when nini transferee to denver to attended the youth actors conservatory, ricky was beyond sad. he went from seeing his girlfriend and best friend everyday to only through a screen, it took a toll.

when ricky walked into lunch on monday and sat at the table wigh the fellow theatre kids, everyone was behind confused.

"uh since when were your eyes brown?" big red asked.

ricky glanced up confused. "what? my eyes are gold, always have been," he replied. kourtney scoffed before pulling out her travel mirror. ricky looked at his reflection in it. true to everyone's words, ricky's eyes were back to the natural deep brown eyes.

"holy shit. what does this even mean?" ricky gasped, still examining his eyes.

ej glanced around the table at everyone before speaking up, "you know about soulmates? maybe you've been away from yours to long." he hinted this in a way that ricky suddenly understood.

"nini," he breathed out quickly pulling out his phone to see a long list of texts.

soon after school, ricky rushed home and up to his room. after grabbing a carry on bag, ricky stuffed it with basic necessities and a few changes of clothes. mike entered the house only to see ricky rushing out of it.

"where are you going?" he called to his son.

"denver! ground me if you want, i need to see nini!" ricky shouted back, entering his car and pulling out of the driveway.

close to two hours later on the plane, ricky touched down in denver. from there he got an uber all the way to the youth actors conservatory. thankfully there was no need to buzz in or put a key code to enter the school.

after arriving to nini's dorm room, he stood outside before sending a text to nini. less than 2 minutes later, nini walked out of her dorm, an obvious shocked expression on her face.

neither waisted a moment and soon rushed over to the other. ricky pulled nini into a tight hug and kissed her forehead. "this was honestly so spur of the moment and i'm probably grounded but i really don't care," ricky spoke.

nini grinned. as the two pulled away, nini glanced up to look at ricky's eyes. she gasped once seeing that his eyes were shining gold.

"your eyes-" nini started. "your's too," ricky added. instead of adding on, ricky placed her hand on ricky's cheek and connected their lips.

"looks like we're soulmates," she spoke softly.

"explains why our eyes have been gold our whole life," ricky added.
