everyone had a soulmate. they received a different heart on their wrist on their 18th birthday. sure some peoples hearts morphed or faded when they got divorced or their soulmate died but regardless, everyone had one.
ricky's birthday was december 12th while nini's was january 28th. on ricky's birthday eve, he spent it at the salazar-roberts home with nini her moms. the two had been dating but were unaware if they were confirmed soulmates. right as the clock hit midnight, ricky felt a burning sensation on his wrist.
after waiting a few moments ricky pulled up his sleeve to reveal a simple black heart mark. it was fairly big but not huge. dana and carol clapped and pulled him into a hug. they then had a small celebration with cake before going up to bed. now, it was nini's turn.
"hopefully i have the same mark," she whispered in his ear during a tight hug.

but it was now january 27th, nini's birthday eve. the day the couple would find out if they were true soulmates. nini was beyond nervous for her birthday which would take place in less than three hours.
"you know i'll always love you, right?" ricky spoke, breaking the silence.
nini stopped her pacing and turned around. "what?" she asked. "i'll always love you. even if we aren't meant to be. you are honestly the best thing that's ever happened to me and i don't think my soulmate could ever top that," ricky explained. nini softly smiled before laying down next to her boyfriend.
"i love you richard bowen," she whispered.
"and i love you more nina salazar-roberts," he responded.
at 11:55, nini and ricky headed downstairs to the kitchen. dana and carol had once again baked a cake and set up the room much like ricky's birthday. the group counted down the midnight, all ready for nini's mark to appear.
at exactly midnight, she felt the same burning pain ricky described. from the look of her face, ricky knew she had just gotten her mark. this was the moment they would find out. nini took a shaky breath and pulled up her sleeve.
right on her wrist, in the same exact spot, was a fairly big but not huge simple black heart mark.
carol and dana gasped proudly and hugged nini. "happy birthday sweetie," carol spoke up. once noticing her daughters shocked reaction, dana spoke up. "we'll give you to some time alone."
once nini's moms had left, ricky pulled up his sleeve. the marks match exactly, from size to color to location, the marks were the same. ricky let out a happy sob and with a shaky smile, he pulled nini into a hug.
"i can't believe it. i mean i can but i also can't?" ricky choked out. nini glanced up before pressing her lips to his. "we're soulmates ricky. we're soulmates."
the following morning, nini woke up first. she looked over to see ricky still asleep. "wake up baby," she mumbled, lightly shaking her boyfriend, no soulmate.
"oh morning neens," ricky greeted, still half asleep.
"okay, so i had a crazy idea," nini started making ricky sit up. "oh no," he spoke with a light smile. "why don't we just full send and get our names tattooed."
ricky looked up at nini shocked. "really?" he asked. nini nodded, "yeah. i mean, i know i'm saying it a lot, but we are soulmates. i've known you since we were five and i'm going to be knowing you a lot long so why not. we don't have to if you don't want," she rambled. ricky silenced her with a quick kiss.
"let's get dressed and we can go down to the tattoo shop."
an hour later, nini and ricky both sat in chairs parallel to each other. ricky was getting 'nina' tattooed inside the heart while nini was getting 'richard'. they deemed it fitting to go by there official name.
once they were done and all wrapped up, the couple stood up. both tattoo artists congratulated the couple as the ringed them up to pay.
walking out of the shop, nini intertwined her hand with ricky's so their soulmate hearts were touching.
