Race to Jotunheim

Tiny snowflakes brushed across Brooks' cheek as he walked deeper into the forest. Winter was coming to Jotunheim, and it would show no mercy once midnight approached. Not that this was an issue for a giant, Brooks didn't mind the cold. He liked the serene air that winter brought to the forest. And he really liked watching the portal in the lake opened as the snow fell.
The portal led to the human world. Many eons ago, humans and giants used to live together, but after the wars, and the fights, and the senseless killings, it was best that humans and giants stayed away from each other. No one dared to step foot in the human world for some time.
Brooks saw an eerie blue light glow at the end of the trail. It was dim at first but he could see the light slowly getting brighter with each step he took. The show was going to start soon. The giant man strolled out into the clearing and scanned the area for a perfect spot to sit. Once he settled down, all he had to do was wait.
The winter breeze started to pick up, sprinkling Brooks' blond hair with snowflakes. The water started to form into rough waves, crashing onto the grassy shore, but at the center of the lake a beacon of light rose up from the waves. Towering above all the trees and reaching for the heavens. Once the top of the beacon pushed through the clouds, it grew so bright that Brooks had to shield his eyes to keep from being blinded. Now the portal had opened.
The light began to dim enough for Brooks to stare at the lake. He  watched the snowflakes dance across the vast lake in awe. The waves died down as the lake slowly illuminated into a bright azure color, giving a breathtaking view.
Then a high pitched scream echoed into the night but was promptly cut off by the sound of the waves hitting the shore! Brooks stood up to his full height and scanned the area for someone, but no one was around. There was no way his mind was playing tricks on him, he definitely heard a scream nearby! His blue eyes locked onto the lake and a chilling thought ran through his head.
He inched his way closer to the lake, his eyes scanning the ground. Then he spotted something shuffling in the grass. His heart dropped when he heard tiny fits of coughs erupted. Brooks knelt down and slowly pushed the grass aside, his fears were confirmed when he saw a little human girl soaked to the bone. She must have been in her early teens, with twin blonde braids that were knotted up due to the rough waves. She fiddled with something in her hands, rubbing it against her green sweater. Brooks narrowed his eyes and quickly realized that it was a pair of thick rimmed glasses! She slipped them back on her face and immediately widened her brown eyes as she stared up at the giant that loomed above her.
Surprisingly, she didn't scream or have a horrified expression on her face, but she remained silent until a gust of wind blew past her, causing her to shiver. That's when Brooks' paternal instincts kicked in. He reached out and used his hand to shield her from the cold air.
"You need to go back to your world before the portal closes, little one!" His voice filled with urgency. "This is no place for a human."
"That's not important right now!" She snapped. "I have to warn Barrett about the war!"
"Who's Barrett and what war?"
"He's my friend who's from Jotunheim. We met a year ago in my world."
Suddenly, Brooks remembered the story about a boy who fell through the portal and was stranded in the human world for six months before finally returning home. He kept the details very brief in interviews and reserved back into a private life. Many just thought this was just some sort of hoax, especially with a particular detail that always stuck out to Brooks.
"That kid…. Said that he never came into contact with a human while he was trapped there."
"I guess he lied to keep other giants from trying to go into the portal." She explained. "Unfortunately, I didn't get that luxury and that's why I'm here."
"What do you mean?"
The girl sighed. "Look, it's a long story. Basically, everyone in my town found out about Barrett and got the military involved, news traveled fast after he left, now people across the United States are paranoid about giants living next door, they're afraid that you guys will invade our world!"
Brooks ran his fingers through his hair. "So they're gonna invade our world to prevent us from invading theirs?"
"Well, they're calling it a negotiation, but we don't have the best record when it comes to being peaceful."
"So you warn Barrett about this war and then what?"
"Um… I haven't gotten that far yet." She admitted.
"You don't have a plan?!" Brooks scolded. "How were you going to get to Barrett's house? Do you even know where he lives?"
Well, no…"
Brooks was in disbelief, part of him wanted to chuckle at this girl's brashness if she didn't do something so dangerous! "You could have died out here, do you know how cold it can get out here?!"
"I didn't have time to think of a plan, but I really really need to find Barrett before that portal closes, so can you please help me out?"
Brooks sighed. He wanted to believe that this kid was crazy and just toss her back in the portal, but she knew too much to just be a crazy kid. If there is a way to stop this war before it even starts, the answer would lie with this human.
"Let's get out of this weather." He smiled and scooped her up. She didn't even flinch.
She sighed in relief.  "Thank you… um what's your name.
"Oh, I'm Brooks, you?
"My name is Katie."
