It's been over a month since Paige had something sweet. When she moved into the home of a rich family, she thought there would be an abundance of sugar lying around for her to borrow; she didn't realize she would live in the walls of a health nut!
But today, she witnessed the wife buy a bag of sugar. Paige was ecstatic, she knew she had to get as much sugar as she could before it disappears for who knows how long! Only problem is that the family had been staying home more often these past few days and trying to work around their schedule had been difficult to work around, but Paige was not going to let a sporadic schedule get in between her and some sugar!
Paige decided to strike midday, this normally wasn't a conventional time for a borrower but she heard the family talk about going on a hike today. She had to strike now! She climbed up onto the counter and ran towards the porcelain pot of sugar. Using all her strength, Paige pushed the lid off and peered inside to see an abundance of the sweet white power! Paige nearly squealed in joy as she opened her pouch to shovel all the sugar inside. She was nearly done when she heard the door swing open. Paige didn't even have time to close her pouch before she had to scramble away; sugar spilt all over the counter! There was no time to get to the ground before the bean came in, Paige had to dive behind the toaster.
Heavy footsteps entered the kitchen and came to a halt at the kitchen counter. Paige held her breath, she knew who ever was there, they were inspecting the mess she made.
"Paige?" A male voice called out. "Are you still here?"
Paige sighed. Of all the people in this house, Matt had to be the one to walk in. There was no point in pretending to be there, he would just go searching for Paige anyways. "Yeah, I'm here." She said while walking out in front of him.
There Matt stood, towering over her. His brown hair was disheveled and his face was a little red from being out in the Californian heat but fortunately, he didn't look mad at her for making a mess. Why would he? He's the one who let her live here.
"You know you don't have to sneak around like that."
"I do if I want to live the life of a borrower."
"Right…. I still don't quite get that." He admitted. "But what have you been doing? Haven't seen you for weeks."
"Just trying to live a quiet life."
"You know, a quiet life doesn't have to mean being alone." Matt said. "You know, Val and I are gonna have a movie night with the kids. Maybe you should come and introduce yourself!"
Paige pinched the bridge of her nose. "Listen, I know you're just trying to help me out here but it would probably be better if you just pretend I'm not here."
"Kinda hard to do that."
"Well, you have to try."
"Paige, I'm not sure it's healthy for you to hide away like this."
"Oh what could you know!" Paige snapped. She met her gaze with Matt's and could see hurt in his eyes, before the guilt could build up inside of her she looked away from him. "I need to be alone."
Matt didn't try to stop her, he just stepped back and let her climb down from the counter. Once Paige reached the floor, she booked it to the secret passage way behind the trash can and left without saying a word.
As she walked through the hallways, she could help but think about Matt's family. They always looked so happy together whenever she was sneaking out on a supply run. There were times where Paige thought about introducing herself to the rest of them but then if she did that, she would be a disgrace to borrowers everywhere! But as she entered her empty little home with no one to greet her at the door, she wondered if the borrower life was even worth it anymore.
