Walking into the alley calms my nerves as I let the darkness consume me fully. will i ever win? The memory comes flooding back to me. In anger, I kick the ground, making an empty can go flying and make a loud clang as it collides with a dumpster just a few feet away. I cringe at the sound and continue down the alley, mentally counting to ten in my head in attempt to calm me down. I took 5 steps but am stopped by the startling noise of a child whimpering. Usually I would keep on walking but I need a distraction, something to replace this memory that keeps reoccurring in my head. I backtrack and peek into the dumpster where the source of the noise is coming from. The sight of a child, no more than 5 by the looks of it, curled up in the dumpster, asleep. The child wreaks of trash and has a frown etched on it's face. It starts to stir and I turn to walk before the child can see me. "Help" a small voice squeaks behind me. I turn around slowly and meet the teary eyes of a frightened little girl, trash in her hair and her clothes in dirty rags. Her big blue eyes stare straight at me, not even flinching at my hideous scars and twisted makeup. I stare back menacingly, trying to frighten her, to get her to fall back asleep and forget this ever happened. But she wouldn't. She kept on staring, her eyes pleading with my soul. "Please, help" her throat his scratchy and it sounds like she hasn't fully learned how to speak yet. The sound of her small voice reminded me of something, something I couldn't quite put my finger on, and I snapped. My whole body was filled with an emotion I haven't felt in years, sympathy. I felt sympathy for this child that I had only just met! This is insane but yet I found myself walking towards the little girl. I picked her up and cradled her in my arms. She nuzzles into my arms with a small smile on her face as she slowly drifts back to sleep.
