Dear Meggie,
I came so close to telling you everything. And by everything, I mean everything. Like the Matt and Kelly everything. The Will and I everything. The whole mother-sister situation. Everything.
We went out for lunch, just the two of us. You looked pretty pissed about something. I kept thinking that Will had said something to you about the kiss, though I remained silent, waiting until you pounced on me. Maybe that was why you had wanted to eat alone with me.
We both sat down at a table at the burger place. I ordered a cup of coffee, you ordered a soft drink. Then you leaned onto your elbows and looked me in the eyes, and all of a sudden all that furiosity was directed at me.
“So Matt told me that Will was kissing somebody during Skeeter’s party,” you began. I took a gulp. You totally knew. You had to know. Matt probably saw me, and is trying to spill the dirt on me. I opened my mouth to explain, but you said, “Hold on a minute” and I shut it again.
“Why didn’t you just tell me? Well, I suppose you did, when you said he wasn’t paying attention to me, but why couldn’t you have just told me, instead of just letting me-”
“Because it would have hurt you, Meggie!” I told you. I thought so hard of telling you anything, and once I had started, I wouldn’t be able to stop. “Meg, I don’t know who it was he was kissing, but he probably doesn’t like her anymore, okay?”
For a second I thought you knew I was lying. But then you smiled, and said, “Thank you, Harriett.”
I guess you just won’t know about the kiss yet. But what I do need to know is why Matt is suddenly deciding to try and ruin our relationship.
So after lunch, I went to find him.
I finally found him on the football field, during his practice with the team. And Will was with him. I didn’t exactly care about that part. I marched right onto that field, my hands clenched into fists, and I screamed as loud as I could, “MATTHEW PARKS!”
He looked in the direction of the yelling. I kept stomping towards him. “Harriett, what the hell are you- ouch!” He rubbed his cheek where I had struck him. “For a tiny girl you sure as hell can hit hard. Jesus, Harriett!”
“Matt, I need to talk to you in private,” I told him.
“I’m kind’ve in the middle of-”
“It can frigging wait then, Mr.,” I said, and dragged him by the ear over to beneath the bleachers. “Alright, Matt, what the hell?”
“I don’t know what you’re- ow! Could ya’ please not do that?” I had hit him again. “Okay, okay, Harriett. I’m sorry. But for what exactly?”
“For telling Meggie about the kiss!” I hissed back at him.
“Well, I’m sorry for telling her to stop going after a guy who obviously likes someone else!” he hissed back. “It’s a lot better than letting her believe that they’ll end up together, and that he loves her.”
“Matt, I swear, if you tell her anything else about it, if you tell her who it was on the other end of his mouth, I swear to-” I was cut off by Coach Miller coming out to fish Matt away from me. Yeah, the coach Miller who apparently Sarah slept with to boost up her grade. That girl skips gym every time.
“Ms. Oliveson, could I ask why you have one of my players with you?” he sternly told me. Or what was supposed to be stern.
“Mr. Miller, could we please just have like two more minutes?” I asked.
“I kind’ve need Parks-”
“Two minutes, I swear.”
He sighed. “Fine. If you two aren’t out by then, I’ll drop your grade.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now please!”
“Just, try to make sure he’s not too out of breath when you’re done with him, alright?”
He left. “Okay, listen Matt, if you tell her he kissed me, I’ll tell Kelly that you lead her to believe you were Craigg and slept with her. And I’m pretty sure that Craigg won’t be too happy to hear that you slept with his girlfriend.”
“Fine, I won’t. But if anyone else saw you two, that’s not my fault, got it? Now I gotta get back to practice.” And he left.
Meggie, I swear, if you find out in the wrong way, this won’t ever end well. And I’m still so sorry that it happened.
Your very sorry best friend,
Harriett
